"He's been eating them for awhile," Matthew says digging through our garbage bin.
I knew that already. With the limited options of food and all. My stomach growls reminding that I haven't eaten all day. I push aside the pain focusing on the more important matter.
"But the night isn't even over. " I say pulling Matthew away from the garbage.
"Huh?" He frowns
"Debra said it happened overnight, the change"
Matthew still looks confused but I can see the gears turning in his head.
"Come on, you've been here longer than me" I sigh frustrated.
"So, you think that the change happens overnight like a swap of your Dad with alien Dad" He says
"Excatly" At this point, I'll take any probably answer for this screwy mess. Aliens seems like the perfect one.
"What do we do?" He asks
"Leave and don't come back" I say without hesitation
"What about your Dad?"
I tense seeing my Dad's car leave over and over again in my head. That man in that car is no longer my father. Or he could be? There could be a chance that there was a big town hall meeting but those chances are slim. He's eaten the pie. The pie cause the change or whatever freaky thing is happened to these people.
"He's not my Dad. Not anymore." I whisper looking at my bare feet
"But what about, like a cure"
"Sure, we'll ask the neighbors for one" I scoff
"Your right..." Matthew goes back to thinking.
"This is crazy" Matthew examines my face making me uncomfortable. He's searching for some emotion from his response.
"What?" I snap
"Nothing" He crosses his arms leaning against my kitchen counter
"Don't get all skecpitical on me" I glare
"I'm not" Matthew crosses his arms leaning on the counter
"Then what's with the look." I grit angry
"Its just that you've been here for awhile with nothing other than pie to eat and so..." He drags but I already know what hes getting at
"I'm allergic!" I roll my eyes
"How convenient" He narrows his eyes
"Who's not to say the same for you" I retort
"Oh, I'm allergic too" He smirks
"Cute, real cute, Matthew" I clench my fist already pissed from the fact that my father is a part whatever cult this town is in.
"Okay, I'm sorry, I'm not allergic alright" He says sounding honest "I smuggled goods from Debras store"
Too bad now it's no longer a goods store.
He reaches in his pocket showing me a wrapped snicker bar. My mouth water at the sight of the delicious candy bar.
"Can I have it" I drool
"Sure" So for dinner we have chocolate bars. Talking about aliens and the possibility of leaving this town behind. With or without my father.
× × ×
We stay up all night and when we finally register that, the sun is already rising.
Surprisingly, I'm not tired. If anything I'm hungry. My stomach digested the small candy bar and begs for more.
Matthew seems to be doing better than me. Which is weird. He's been living off of junk food."So" Matthew stands up "We leaving or what?"
I look around the room I've only been in for a few days. Talking about leaving was easy but now actually doing it is...its hard.
"Okay, but.."
"But, what?"
"Nevermind" I shake my head
"Alright, let's go" He heads for the bedroom door
"Hold up, you never told me what happened to Richard." I stall
"Oh, well" He says caught off guard with my sentence "He ended vomiting the whole thing up and went home sick"
"Oh, that's nasty" I nod grabbing my clothes filled bookbag and following him out my room and downstairs.
Halfway downstairs the front door unlocks and my dad walks in.
"Dad!" I shout
My dad is back. He looks completely the same though. Nothing is different.
"Jesus! Morris, you scared me" My dad holds his chest looking at me then Matthew
"You two headed somewhere?" My dad looks curiously at the backpack on my back
"Yeah to school. Where did you go last night?" I lie watching him closely
"Some meeting in town hall" He sighs whistling his way to the kitchen where I'm sure he's going to eat more pies
"Have fun at school!" He says right when I head outside
A/N
