We follow the blue convertible until we are no longer driving past house but instead green pastures. Cows graze grass. Horse neigh as we ride by. With cloudless skies sbove its almost a beatuiful sight.
Almost.
"We are here" Dad makes a left with the car in front of him
"Great. A fair."
I can see a Ferris wheel and tons of tents. Children and parents run around laughing, having a good time. If only they knew.
"So, here's the deal." I say "No matter what you don't eat the pies."
"Morris" He groans aggravated
"Whatever," I shake my head
I wait until Dad parks in the grass before hopping out and ignoring his yells. First, I find Matthew.
I run through the grass into the chaos of fun. Finding a brown head isn't too hard. Sure, when half everyone here is a brunette.
I start calling for him. I search tents. Food stands. The inflatable pools and bouncy houses. I even stand on a picnic table shouting at the top of my lungs.
"Morris?" Matthew pushes past a group looking surprised and confused
"I've been looking all over for you!" I yell over all the screams around me.
"Why?"
"You lied to me about Kenneth" I shout
He shrugs crossing his arms looking uninterested. I punch his shoulder.
"Why?" I say "Why'd you lie"
"It doesn't matter anymore" He shrugs again
"Tell me" My patience runs dry. I punch his chest this time.
"Chill out, it doesn't matter" He shoves me disappearing into the crowd
I won't lose him so easy. I grab his shirt and follow him.
"Get off me" He shoves me back and breaks into a run toward the Ferris wheel.
I fall on my butt but recover quickly going after him. It does matter.
He stops at the Ferris wheel and talk to the usher before entering a carriage.
"Stop!" I yell running faster
The usher stops telling me I'll have to wait for the next go as the Ferris wheel starts. I ignore him running and jumping for Matthews carriage.
"Are you crazy!" He exclaims
I cling on. My heart racing and sweating profusely. Matthew helps me inside. I sit on the bench and watch we go higher and higher.
"I'm not playing no games! Why did you lie and why did you run?! You know something!" I yell enraged
"Morris, there is nothing wrong here," He sighs putting his face in his hands
"What are you talk-" I'm cut off by a bullhorn below.
"Ladies and gentlemen, proceed to the big tent for the judging of pies"
No, no, no! I have to get off.
"We have to stop them!" I say frantically
"Morris, listen to me," He starts "I lied about everything"
"Shut up" I snap standing up using the railing for support
" What are you doing!?" Matthew questions
The Ferris wheel jolts suddenly stopping and I nearly topple off if Matthew didn't grab me.
"Sit down!" He orders
"No!" I proceed standing
The Ferris wheel is stuck. Great, they are trying to stop me now.
"You lured me here" I gasp
"What?" He exhales
"I should push you the hell off, right now" I grab his shirt lifting him up
"No, Morris," He says nervously " Hear me out"
"But I thought it didn't matter" I shake him. The carriage rocks dangerously
From below the maintenance guy tells us that there are technical issues. Yeah, right? The whole town probably tampered with the whole machine.
I let go of Matthew looking below. People file for the tent. They can't though! I have to do something.
"I'm gonna jump! I gonna jump!" I yell
That gets everyones attention. A couple on the Ferris wheel screams and the people below join them.
"Morris, what are you-"
"Shut up!" I shout at him
"Look, I'm not gonna jump, I just needed everyone's attention" I yell at the top of my lungs
A crowd forms down below. People still try to tell me not to jump but I have no intention on doing so.
"Do not eat the pies! Their-" I rack my brain "Posioned! The pies poisioned!"
That gets everyone below going. They all start screaming. Running for who knows what.
"Morris, I lied- "
"Shush"
"No! Listen! I only said all those things about this town so I could get you to go with me"
"What?" I look at Matthew confused as ever.
"I lied about everything, about Kenneth, about the pies changing people. I just wanted to convince you to runaway with me" He confesses
My whole heart drops. I feel faint.
"Thats- that doesn't mean, the pies are still-"
"Morris, I've been eating their pies since Day one, nothing's wrong with them"
"But"
I can't process what I'm hearing. There's nothing wrong here. This is just- it's unbelievable.
"So this-"
"Is just a very old fashioned town, that loves pies very much"
"No, but what about Debra and her store, and my mom," I peer down at the chaos I created. People running around like chickens with no heads
"One threat of an eviction could do that for Debra, She wouldn't want leave and for your mom, I guess this place has a influence on her."
I shake my head not wanting to believe it.
"This doesn't- this town is weird," I sigh sitting down
"I know, that's why I wanted to leave so bad but I guess it's not as bad, not with you here" He nudges me with his elbow
We sit silent for a minute
"Sorry, for lying" He sighs
"What about the stores changing so fast?" I ask ignoring him
"Overnight construction," He shrugs "Mabye magic"
Mabye magic. I'll believe it.
