"Your grounded for like life," Dad points a meaty finger in my face when I'm safely on the ground
"I know," I nod glancing at Matthew. His adoptive mother hugs him and he peers over her shoulder at me rolling his eyes.
I can't help but laugh.
"Well, I hope your statisfied" Dortha strides over to me "They canceled the competition because they were suspicious of food poisioning"
"I'm sorry, mabye it's for the best" I shrug
She smiles staring at me for a long time. Her white straight teeth glistening under the sun.
"Mabye" She winks before going off
I blink twice thinking mabye I imagined that wink she sent me. I look at Dad prepared to tell him but I think better of it.
"Home" I say to Dad
"Yeah, don't ever do that again, Morris" He ends up hugging me
"Dad!" I blush embarrassed
"See you tomorrow, Morris" Matthew says
"Yeah" I say separating myself from my dad and heading for our car
"Morris!" I hugged from behind and the sweet smell of pecan tickles my nose
"Morris, you scared me" Mom says in super raspy voice
"Yeah, I scared everyone" I laugh
Mom let's go of me turning me to face her. She looks me in the eyes smiling warmly.
"We should get going, Grace" Dad says grabbing me and tugging me to the car
"Wait, Paul," Mom says dramatically. I guess some things never change. Whatever influence this place had on my mom was huge.
Dad and I stop facing mom once again.
"I'm sorry, for the other day," Mom smiles "That wasn't a nice thing to say"
I look up at Dad. Instead, of looking angry he just looks disappointed.
"Its fine, Grace" Dad smiles
"Alright, have a nice day" She yells as we continue our way to our car.
"Dad"
"Huh? " He grunts
"Is this place how you remembered?" I ask cautiously
"I guess it's changed a bit"
"How so?"
"All these pie shops." He laughs
I laugh too. Still clinging onto a few suspicions but I'll let them go sooner or later.
