There is a long weekend this week, and I'm so excited. We are going to Maine.
Someone that takes care of our vacation home in Maine knew that there was a long weekend and called to see if we were coming.
That's right! My vacation home lie came true. Definitely going to take advantage of this one. My family was very confused when they got the call.
They thought they were being pranked.
I acted cool and said, "Don't you remember?"
Dad says into the phone, "Hold on." After covering the phone he says, "Remember what?"
I continue, "We've had it since I was a kid. It's the house we lived in when we lived in Maine."
"Oh!" my mom says surprised, "I thought we sold that house."
"Me too," dad speaks up.
"We were going to sell it but decided not to. How could you forget? We go almost every year!"
"Yeah!" Henry speaks up.
He probably just wants to go to Maine. Because he definitely has no clue about the house.
Dad uncovers the phone and says, "We'll be there Thursday evening until Monday afternoon." He hangs up. "We need to book some flights. And since I have parent/teacher conference, I will come Friday morning."
"No," my mom speaks, "The only ones who come anyway are the ones who are doing fine."
"I don't know. Some parents get a little mad when I'm not there."
"You'll be fine."
"Fine. Ok. I'll go with you guys," Dad gives in.
"Yay! So we are all going to Maine?" Henry screams.
"Yep," Mom answers, "You better go get packing."
Henry and I rush to our rooms. I start packing. Then I think, "I said I would take advantage of this and what better way than bringing my best friend along." I run out to ask my parents, and there is Braidy. What is he doing here? I run back to my room, but Braidy must have seen me because he yells my name and follows me. Oh, no!
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm here because I love you."
"Well, news flash. I don't like you," I scream.
"Oh, I know. You love me."
"No. I. Do. Not." Will he ever understand the words I am saying?
"Yes, you do. You might just need some time to figure out your feelings."
"No," I start, but he cuts me off.
"I heard you were going to Maine this weekend. Can I come?"
"We are not going anywhere. And even if we were, you definitely couldn't come! Now get out of my house and never come back." He tries to give me a hug, but unlike in the hospital, I have all my strength. I push him away before he gets to close. He falls to the ground. I think he hit his head on my door frame, but it can't be that bad because he got up quickly and ran out.
My parents call me to come see them.
When I reach them I ask, "Yes?"
"Are you okay, sweetie?" my mom asks.
"Yes. I'm fine. Just a little-worked up."
"Okay. I love you."
"I know you do. And I love you."
"Who even was that guy? And how did he get in?" my mom asks concerned.
"I don't know how he got in, but he's," I start but don't know how to finish. An old friend with feelings? The truth? Or the I don't even know card?
My parents patiently wait for an answer.
I told myself I would be truthful. So here it goes. Maybe they could help figure things out anyway. "Ok. So his name is Braidy. I lied about having a boyfriend, named Braidy, when we moved back here. And somehow he is here now. He also showed up at the hospital to visit me."
"Ok. We will keep him away."
"Please do. Oh! And he's not the only lie that is, I guess you would say, alive."
"Who else?" my parents say in unison.
"One who and one what. At least so far. I lied to get out of the community service and said I tutor a deaf ten-year-old who is now real. And that vacation house," my parents faces change, "It is also a lie come true."
"What? So you also lied about it to us once it was real," my mom screams at me.
"Yes," I say shyly, "I'm really sorry. I am trying to do better. Oh! And one last thing. Can I invite Sabrina to come this weekend?"
My mom says, "No," while my dad says, "Sure, honey."
My mom turns to my dad, "Have you heard any of this conversation? She lied directly to our faces."
"So. It's half-way our fault for actually believing her. How could we have forgotten that we didn't sell our house in Maine? We just let her convince us."
"I guess your right. And I know I was excited to go back to Maine, and I think Henry really wanted to go too."
"So that's a yes!" I say excitedly.
"Yes," my mother said half reluctant.
When I almost reached my room to ask Sabrina, my mom says, "But only if you are good the next couple days."
"Yes, ma'am," I answer. Off to a good start.
I quickly text Sabrina. "The vacation house in Maine is true. My family and I are going this weekend. They said you can come, too."
She answers fairly quick, like always. "That was a lie, too? You need to stop. But I can definitely come!"
"Yay!" This is going to be the best weekend ever. "We are flying out sometime Thursday evening. And we will be back Monday afternoon."
"This is going to be awesome."
"I wonder if you can spend the night Wednesday night. I'll go ask my parents" I leave my phone on the charger and go ask my parents. "Sabrina said she could come. But I was wondering if..."
My dad cuts me off, "No one else can come."
"I know. I was just wondering if she could spend the night on Wednesday."
"That's fine with me," my mom replies.
Yes! I start heading back to my room when my dad says, "Wait, wait, wait."
Oh no! He usually always lets me do what I want. With some limits, of course. I turn around.
"Just kidding. That's fine with me. I like Sabrina. She's a good influence. Don't let her get away."
I smiled. Phew! "And don't worry, I won't let her get away."
I get back to my room and tell Sabrina that she can come on Wednesday.
"Awesome! My parents said it's okay."
"This is, by far, going to be the best weekend ever. I can't wait!"
I woke up several times during the night. I don't know if it was because I was so excited or I just had a bad dream. If it was a bad dream, then I don't remember it, like most of my dreams.
When I woke up to for school, my parents were in my face screaming at me. "Kamri! Wake up!"
"I'm up. Is everything okay?"
"You have ten minutes until we have to leave for school."
"What?" I jump out of my bed. Apparently, I had snoozed my alarm seven times. "Can you make me a bagel?" I ask my mother.
"Sure."
She leaves.
"Good morning, dad." I hug him and kiss him on the cheek.
"Good morning."
He just stands there. "Now, can you leave? I have to get dressed."
I throw on some skinny jeans and a hoodie. I go and brush my teeth and put on a little mascara.
"It's time to go!" my mom scream at Henry and I.
I run and grab my converse and some socks.
When I get to the living room, my mom has my backpack and bagel. I grab them from her. "Thanks." We all rush out the door and pile in the car. Off we go to school.
When I get to school, I walk in the building and towards my friends. The bell rings when I'm about halfway there. Oh no! How will I find Sabrina? I try and stand still and wait for her, but there are too many people. I get pushed around. I'll have to manage. I can do this.
I start walking with the crowd. Once I get out of the building to go to the main one, the crowd separates a little since we are outside.
I hear Sabrina's voice, "Kamri! Over here!"
I look in the direction I think it is coming from, and I see Sabrina and Shawn waiting by a pole. I run towards them and give Sabrina a hug.
We start walking.
"What happened? Why were you so late?"
"I overslept. I snoozed my alarm seven times."
"Seven!" Sabrina exclaims.
"Yeah. And then I only had ten minutes to get ready."
"Well, you look beautiful," Shawn chimes in.
I blush.
"He's right."
"Thanks."
When it's time to go to my dad's class, I go like normal. He stops me at the door and gives my a big hug and a kiss on the top of my head.
"Glad you were ready in time."
"Well, not really. I got here as soon as the bell for class rang."
"Well, I wouldn't be able to tell. You look beautiful. Like always."
We get to our lockers and continue our day like normal.
When it comes time for lunch, everyone at our table is asking me why I was late. "I just overslept and only had ten minutes to get ready."
The rest of the day went just like normal. I finished the school day and went home.
Home sweet home!
We start packing for our weekend! I'm so excited. I hope we get to see the Northern Lights, again. I haven't seen them for several years, and they are only visible in Maine a few times a year. Usually around this time.
I finish packing and go to get my shower.
When I'm done, I go to my room and decide to watch an episode of something. I'm in the middle of several shows. I go to bed around 9:30 because I want to make sure that I get enough rest, so I don't sleep through my alarm. Even if I do keep waking up.
I wake up to my alarm. Good. I get to school, and I'm one of the first ones of my group there. The only other ones there are Sabrina and Gabriella.
"Oh! Look who it is, Gabriella! It's Sleeping Beauty," Sabrina says with a smile.
"Oh, haha. You're so funny," I answer sarcastically. Not long after Shawn comes in. About five minutes later, all my friends have come. The day goes on like every other ordinary school day, except one thing.
At the end of the day, I go to the bus line to wait for Henry. And guess who was there. Braidy! Oh, joy!
I leaned down and whispered to Henry, "We are about to start walking really fast to Dad's classroom. Okay?"
"Ok. But why?"
"I'll explain later. Now." We start walking towards his class. Braidy starts running, so I pick up our pace.
"Kamri!"
Henry looks back.
"Who's that?"
"I'll explain later." I pick up the speed a little more, but soon slow down because Braidy gets stop by a teacher, who is probably asking him why he is running.
When we get to Dad's classroom, I shut the door behind me. Sabrina is already there.
Dad asks us what's wrong.
I tell him that Braidy was at the bus line.
"Okay. I'll take care of it."
"He might be coming here, but I don't know," I turn to Henry, "That's why we were going so fast."
He doesn't answer. He is just sprawled upon the floor.
We hear a knock on the door. We try and be really quiet. Like a lockdown drill. Except the light is still on.
Someone knocks again.
"Mr. Taylor! Open your door right now."
We rush up and my dad opens the door. It's Principal Kane. And she seems a little mad.
She begins, "There is some boy here," Oh no! "who claims he is dating your daughter."
"That can't be because my daughter doesn't even have a boyfriend," a little louder he says, "And if she did, he would get a major talking to from me," he looks at me, "As well as my daughter."
Before he turns around, he smiles at me.
"Now Kamri, do you have a boyfriend?"
"No way!"
"Then who is this boy?" Principal Kane sticks her head out into the hallway. "It seems he has left. I'm sorry to bother you."
"No problem at all," my father replies, all sophisticated like.
She leaves.
"That was close," I say, "Nice save."
"Thanks. Now let's get home."
Once we get home, we all help get supper ready, even Sabrina.
While we eat we watch The Flash, and then I go to bed, excited about the weekend.
