The streets of Paris were dark, lit only by looming street lights and an elegant crescent moon. It was a cloudless night, and the stars formed their patterns, a beauty for whoever wished too look.
And Ladybug crashed through a window.
In pursuit of a glowing akuma, she had lost control of her swing, screaming as her feet broke through the glass. She fell through the tall room, landed skillfully through a somersault, before bouncing back onto her feet.
Chat Noir's landing was different. He followed her through the same window. Shocked at how far away the floor was, and tangled in black curtains, he retracted his stick and screamed, flailing his arms before landing on his face. He moaned in pain.
"I thought cats always landed on their feet," Ladybug had the nerve to tell him.
He got up slowly, pulling the curtains off him. "I'm a bit more of a pussy."
They looked around the dim room, lit only by whatever light came through the window they fell through. There were long and heavy black curtains, and a confusing panel of controls.
"It's a stage, Ladybug," Chat informed her.
They felt the curtain, to find an opening, and busted through, landing with fighting stances ready.
But there was no one there.
"My Lady, it's a piano!" Chat exclaimed excitedly.
He ran over, sat at the stool, and pressed one low, montrous key. The sound was loud, and echoed through the huge space.
"The acoustics here are great," he murmured in awe.
Ladybug went back through the curtains. On a far wall, she found exactly what she was looking for: a whole set of dozens of light switches. She flicked them all, hearing the buzzing of electricity through the walls and overhead. From her location, some of the light came through the curtains, but it was relatively dark.
She heard Chat give an appreciative whimper, and came out to see.
She stood on the centre of the stage, looking out into rows and rows of red, velvety chairs, walls of a soft yellow lit by marvelous, powerful lanterns, stretching up into a dome shaped, ornate ceiling, embroidered with gold. There were even more seats protruding from the walls, hidden in balconies and rimmed with even more gold.
Ladybug found herself speechless for the first time.
She looked over to Chat who was getting up from the piano stool, mouth gaping at the magnificent auditorium. It was glorious.
Finally finding her voice, she swallowed, and said to him, "You're gonna catch flies, Chat."
"Uh, yeah," he said back, not really paying attention.
In a few moments he turned his attention to the piano, and expertly laid his finger down upon the keys.
Ladybug approached and touched the piano. "Can you play?"
"Yeah," he told her uncertainly, though he perfectly well knew that he could.
She looked at him expectantly, so he tried. He played 'Mary had a Little Lamb' to test out the piano, hitting a wrong note at the end.
"Ah," he cringed, "sorry."
She laughed and sat next to him. "Very impressive. Let me show you something."
So she played him a piece, and he was wowed. It seemed there was really nothing Ladybug couldn't do.
And then he played a piece back, but it was more extreme than hers.
It was her turn to be wowed. She complimented him, but being who she was, her competitive spirit soared through her mind to pull the most complicated piece she knew.
After playing, Chat just looked at her, and couldn't understand what to tell her. He didn't know how to make her know that her company was so splendid, and that he was amazed with all her ability. She was so talented, and he appreciated it, but to tell her?
"Ladybug, you're amazing," was all he said, because to tell her everything he loved about her would take a lifetime.
"Thank you, Chat," she replied sincerely, friendly.
Friendly.
So yes, he decided, I have been eternally friendzoned.
But as he always did, he sucked it up and shoved it deep within him and far away. It's what he did to stay happy and enjoy his time with Ladybug, without thinking about how his love is so close, but so far away, with him, but untouchable.
He played her another piece, the most difficult one he knew. Only, he was still working on it, and hadn't had it perfected yet.
His fingers flew across the keys at such speed, constantly creating varying notes that sat together perfectly, and shifted emotion. Sometimes he hit the wrong key before his finger slipped onto the right one, however, Ladybug didn't noticed. She was focused on how he seemed to be playing notes in every range and octave all at the same time. He was quicker than a pouncing cat.
She accepted his incredulous skill.
"Well okay."
She moved to sit on top of the piano. Chat watched the way the lanterns made her hair gleam and her skin glow, and how her eyes became specked with gold in the dazzling auditorium lights.
"So go on then," she was saying, "play another one for me will you? Please, Chat. That was incredible."
A tiny bit bashful, he looked down at the keys.
"Anything for you, m'lady."
The akuma was getting further and further away, probably desperately hunting for the superheroes at that very moment, and yet they sat in gleeful harmony, blazed by the spot lights of the auditorium.
