Ladybug needed to get Adrien to safety. There was a deep gash on his shoulder, near his neck. She could also see the side of his shirt becoming thick and heavy with blood. He had been sliced there, too, though the cut was hidden by clothing. Liquid oozed out, matching the colour of her suit.
"Hold on," she said, pretending she wasn't about to cry. "You're gonna be okay."
She cradled Adrien's head and placed him on the ground. Stepping back, she launched an air born kick that threw the doors open. Lifting Adrien like a delicate glass sculpture, she dashed into a closing elevator just before it shut.
Then she cursed her stupidity for the thousandth time that day.
Just as she predicted, the elevator jolted to a stop.
The city was on lock down.
She lost her balance and her grip on Adrien, but luckily, threw herself to the ground fast enough to cushion his crash, her arms behind his injuries.
She sat him up against the wall and checked for a pulse.
Good, he's okay.
Ladybug stood and looked around for anything that could get them out. She pressed the 'help' button. Nothing.
Then she hit a few more. Once again, nothing.
Frustrated, she took a step back, planting her feet into the tile, and swung her yoyo at the doors.
A dent in her yoyo. That's it.
Of course she can't break the door.
Her miraculous provides the power of creation.
She needed Chat Noir, the opposite. Destruction. He could break them out.
"Ladybug?"
She swung around, ready to cry again.
"Adrien! You're okay. Ugh, I'm so relieved. I was worried. I thought you'd...you'd..."
She couldn't continue.
She got on all fours next to him, reaching for his shirt, and stopping herself.
"Do you mind if I...if I... You know..." She looked to the blood seeped cloth. "Can-can I check your injuries?"
"Of course, Ladybug."
He sounded as awe-struck and terrified as she did.
Awkward crashed between them. She could feel Adrien's eyes on her as she pulled up the hem of his shirt.
She braced herself before actually looking.
Sure, it was covered in blood, but it wouldn't leave her head that this was Adrien with a bare stomach. She'd fantasized beach days and every scenario where he might take his shirt off, (something she wouldn't dare admit to,) but this was so different.
It was big and bloody. Marred flesh and skin jumbled together.
Reluctantly, she placed her hands on the healthy skin beside the gash. Adrien tensed under her touch.
"Th-That looks t-terr...ible..." Her voice was thick with tears.
She realized she couldn't help him very much by his side. She would have to over step a few boundaries to ensure his safety.
Her thoughts were clogged with tears, her vision was blurred with cries. She let this happen to Adrien. How can she be a trusted superhero, if she can't even be trusted with one person?
He'd never trust her again.
Ladybug kneed her way over his legs, so she was assessing him from above.
She hugged him to her chest, lifting him off the wall with extreme care so he wouldn't get hurt. She removed his white shirt, rolled it up, and tied it around his torso as a makeshift bandage.
She was audibly crying, when she slumped down next to him.
"Ladybug..." Even in his horrible state Adrien managed to loop his arm beneath her neck, and cradle her cheek with his hand. He did it with no regrets. She really needed it.
"Please don't cry. I'm okay. Really. Thank you for helping me."
She wanted to lay her head on his shoulder, but she thought it may hurt him.
"You're not okay. You're a mess, and- and- it's all my fault. I always knew I wasn't right for this job. I knew I'd fail you, and I'd fail everyone. I don't deserve the Miraculous. Everyone counts on me, and I'm the only one who can't do it. I'm sorry, Adrien. I'm sorry."
She stopped herself before he could pity her. How pathetic. He was practically stabbed and the hero was crying.
"Ladybug?" Adrien choked out.
She met his eyes.
"I don't think it's your fault. You... had a lot of pressure, people were being hurt all over... And I know you did your best for everyone. You couldn't save them all. You couldn't waste your time on me."
He looked so sincere, his little smile. His eyes were almost closed. He was pale from blood loss.
"Don't say that. You don't understand. You should be my priority. I can't let anything happen to you. I don't know how I let this happen."
She didn't know when it happened, but her hand had landed on his bare skin, above the gash. A pinkish glow began to emerge, picking up light, soon blinding.
The world was nothing but a pink flash. Hands gripping her. Warmth was near. Nothing was clear, but it all felt safe.
In moments, the light swam out of her vision. She looked to Adrien. Did he see it too?
She then realized his hands were gripping her. They were all over her, squeezing her into him like a teddy bear. He had her facing him, a hand on his chest, and the other right where his wound was. Or... should've been.
Because it was gone.
"The power of creation and life," Adrien whispered.
She gaped at him. How could he know? Where did all this perfect muscle come from? The blood was inside of him now, running through his veins as they should be.
She healed him.
"Ladybug, I think you need a partner."
He kissed her cheek, realizing it might be the only shot he'd ever get.
Within moments, Chat Noir was standing before her, ready to cataclysm the elevator, break them out, and save the day.
They would do it together. They were partners after all.
