Day one : Five ways to win your heart
He fell backwards so his back was now laying against the fake green grass our school had planted in front of the building. Considering we were the only one with free period, the school yard was pretty much empty, and usually I'd say it was a relief because I hated being around big crowds, but sitting here next to Carter Smith, school's bad boy made me realize that maybe having class right now was better.
I had just been sitting here, enjoying the beautiful summer breeze when he took the next step and sat down with me. I was really confused at first and thought maybe he had mistaken me for one of the brunettes he sleeps around with, but when he smiled at me with raised eyebrows, I knew it was his intention from the start.
''Uh,'' I had stuttered, ''C- Can I help you?''
Carter had tilted his head to the side, his eyebrows raising upwards as if questioning me, but there was amusement shining in his eyes, and I knew it was his way of messing around with me.
''What makes you think I need help, Evans?''
I squinted my eyebrows to the middle of my t-zone, confused. ''You know my last name?'' I scooted over so there was a bigger gap between the two of us, ''How do you know my last name?''
Carter laughed and ran a hand through his dark locks, ''Relax, Evans. It says your name on your binder.''
And sure enough, when I looked down at my folder, my name was clearly written on it with a black bold sharpie. I felt my ears heat up, and it was definitely not because of the heat.
I was now working on an assignment in French class that was due to tomorrow, when Carter's voice randomly cut the silence that had been washing over us.
''How do you make a girl fall for you?''
I snapped my head so hard in this direction, I was surprised it wasn't broken. ''What did you say?''
Carter pushed himself off the grass and raised both of his knees up so he could rest he arm on them, ''I said, how do you make a girl fall for you? I mean, it doesn't sound hard but why is it? What's the rule, what's the tricks?''
I blinked, not entirely sure if I heard correct. When I saw the serious expression hovering over Carter's face, I realized that he was being serious and he actually expected an answer, and I actually kind of felt disappointed I couldn't give one specific to him.
''Sorry, Carter. I actually don't know,'' I say, fiddling with the hem of my shirt. It caught me off guard. Carter was the hottest boy at this school and any girl would fall for him in the blink of an eye. Who was the girl that caught his attention that didn't fall for him?
I was curious.
Carter narrowed his eyes at me and suddenly, without me even seeing it coming, he scooted so close to me, my breath caught themselves in my lungs. Carter noticed that he had literally taken my breath away so he awkwardly leaned back,
''Uh sorry.'' He says, scratching the back of his neck.
I couldn't help but fight a smile when I saw him in this state. The Carter everyone was seeing, was definitely not the Carter in front of me right now, and for some reason, I was happy I was the only person to witness this.
''You're a girl,'' he says, pointing at me, his eyes still squinting as if he was thinking and trying to organize his thoughts.
''Yes?'' I say, raising an arched eyebrow.
''Tell me five ways to win your heart,''
I almost spat out- I mean, if I had a drink, I'd probably spit it out. ''What?''
''Come on. I bet all girls thinks the same, and even if they don't, your answers shouldn't be all that far from her answers.''
''Who even is this?''
He shook his head, waving his hands in the air, ''Doesn't matter. Just tell me, Evans.''
I sighed, ''Okay uhm,'' I was trying to brainstorm but the thing was, I wasn't even sure what would capture my attention. I haven't had any interaction with boys since Cameron, and I really hoped I wouldn't have one, but looks like life always thinks the opposite.
''First, I really like when boys are nice to kids and their mothers,''
He snorted, ''Why?''
''Because if they treat their own mothers like shit, how would they treat you?''
Carter was about to open his mouth to say something but closed it as if what he was about to say, wouldn't make sense with what I had just exclaimed.
''Second, for me, it's important if a guy is outgoing, because that means he doesn't stay inside all day and play video games,''
Carter looks down at the grass, ''Some guys can sit inside all day and play video games, and still be outgoing,'' he mutters but I can still hear him clearly. I decide to ignore it though because the faster I tell him things, the sooner he'll leave.
''Thirdly, I mean looks doesn't always have to be a good thing but I'd prefer if a guy has good hair and a nice style so that when someone asks me if my boyfriend is pretty, I can say yes without hesitating, 'I tell him sincerely.
Carter wipes a non-existent dust of his shoulder and blows his fingers, as he raises his eyebrows with a full on smirk, ''That's no problem for a guy like me.''
''Fourth, he has to be nice and fifth, he has to be smart in school, or that's just a plus, but yeah that's about him,'' I tell Carter.
There's a serious expression plastered on Carter's face until he breaks out into a full out grin. He gets up from the grass and places one of his hand in pocket and stretches the other one to put it on top of my head as he ruffles my hair.
I look at him to find him smiling down at me, ''Thanks, Evans.''
