"You're late." Queen Iridescence looked down her nose at me as I skidded into the training area. "Sorry Mother!" I sketched a quick bow, stopping in front of her after I shot a dirty look at Tigermoth.
"Well, since you're here now, I suppose we can get started." Tigermoth quickly left after hearing the queen, and I stood nervously, wondering what was going to happen to me.
"So..."
"Being a Morpher is a huge responsibility, Moonsong. You must understand this. If you make one mistake...you die. If you relax for one moment...you die. If you-"
"Alright alright!" I said hurriedly. "I thought you were going to teach me how to use my power. Not lecture me about it all day long."
The queen looked at me crossly. "You need to know the risks first, or there will be serious consequences." She closed her eyes, and the next thing I knew, she was across the room. "This isn't playtime." Now she was right beside me, whispering in my ear. "So do you think you're ready?"
"Yes, Your Majesty." I lowered my eyes to the ground, and she snorted. "You need to keep your concentration in one spot. Preferably somewhere you've been before." she began, pacing in front of me. "If you don't, you will fade forever."
I shook out my wings, already excited to start. "Ok, try and reach the door." Queen Iridescence pointed to the training area entrance. I closed my eyes, mimicking her earlier actions. "One...two..."
I felt a tugging sensation in my gut, then a tingling starting from my head to my tail. When I opened my eyes, I had appeared in front of the wall, five feet off from the doors to the entrance. "Well, it's an impressive start." the queen admitted, sweeping over to me. I grinned at her, imagining myself behind her. And there I was! I was getting used to the sensation of teleporting, or 'morphing'. I was in the corner, then at the doors, then right in front of the queen! I laughed, and she turned to me in alarm. "Moonsong, stop!" she cried out, but I didn't hear her. I was too filled with excitement to listen.
I wonder if I could teleport to the central pavilion. Wouldn't that be a surprise to Skybright! I could rub it right in her snotty face. I braced my claws in the floor, already dreaming about my family's awed looks. "Moonsong!" Queen Iridescence ran over, but I could already feel myself disappearing. But something was different. Something was...off.
"Mom?" I squeaked, my wings and tail turning numb as I spoke.
"Mo!"
Her voice was getting farther away, and I desperately tried to reverse direction. I want to go back! Take me back!
But my powers wouldn't listen. I could feel myself getting dizzier, and my limbs felt like they were floating and dissolving at the same time. "Help! Someone!" I finally cried out, feeling my neck getting stretched out and my teeth rattling. A flash of sunlight off clear blue water was the last thing I saw before I couldn't see anything at all.
