"Dad, look what I found," I brought the puppy into his studio and held it up so that he could see it. He gasped loudly and quickly asked for it, pulling it closer.
"It's so small!" He exclaimed, ruffling its ears and immediately pulling it to his chest.
"It's a pungsan puppy. And it's a boy. I don't know what to name it..." I had forgotten to ask him, amidst my excitement, if I could actually keep the puppy. He looked at me smilingly and put the puppy on his lap.
"Are you sure you can take care of him?" He asked, rocking him back and forth in his arms.
"I think it would be good for us," I said, lowering myself so that I could stroke his little paws.
"Let's name it Dubu?" Dad asks, his eyebrows hitched up and a grin gracing his face. I screamed loudly as I realised he had agreed to take Dubu in, but quieted down when the dog stirred. I excitedly took the dog away from his arms and begin to walk back down when he calls my name again.
"Take him to the vet tomorrow to make sure he is feeling okay. Also, get some dog food from the pet store two blocks down. If you have time now, you can finish all this work." Oh, I hadn't realized just how much work this was going to be. I pondered and decided to skip doing homework today. I had a two day weekend to finish everything any way.
-
I bought a leash and a collar for Dubu, and a little dog bed. I got some milk powder, and dog biscuits that the man in the pet store suggested I should get. He also gave me directions to the nearest vet and I took Dubu there as well. It was late in the evening when I returned back home, with five shopping bags in my arm, and Dubu tucked into my jacket pocket.
"You've had a busy day," My dad says as I enter the house. I bow my head and smell what he was cooking.
"Bulgogi!" I exclaimed excitedly as I ran towards the dinner table, throwing all the shopping bags onto one chair and placing Dubu in my lap.
"You look like you haven't eaten all year," My dad joked, as he served the beef pieces to me. I quickly began to eat. Bulgogi was my favorite dish ever and I waited every year for my birthday to eat it. I had even composed a song as a six-year-old centered around it.
"You're still the same," My dad chided me as he began to eat as well.
"Bulgogi is the best," I said as I stuffed three to four pieces in my mouth at once. I smiled as I recollected the times I had eaten this dish with my parents in my birthday. I loved it even more, now.
-
I rubbed my belly as I walked out of the bathroom after a long, hot shower. I fell onto the sofa and decided to make my bed for the night after a few minutes of playing with Dubu. However, he was sleeping in the corner, having had his milk. I had even put a small blanket over his body to keep him warm. He had barely moved the whole day but I had a feeling he would keep getting bigger and bigger every day.
I was looking at Dubu affectionately when I heard my phone ring in my pocket.
I unlocked it to find that Yoongi had sent me a message.
It read: Do you want to go out tonight?
I was mildly confused and slightly panicked as I read the message again and again.
I closed my eyes and then opened them again to check if I had seen the message correctly. I twiddled my thumbs over the screen as I pondered how I should reply.
I decided to think it through while I made my bed. I began thinking about the puppy that Yoongi had casually slid over to me because my sadness had annoyed him. I began thinking about all the times my heart had fluttered slightly at something he said or did. I don't know why but I had grown to like his company.
I bit nervously on my lip as I tried to come to a rational decision.
I sighed, giving in and replying with a yes and asking for the time and place that I had to meet him.
He said that he would meet me at the Itaewon subway station and I began to get ready.
I removed my night clothes and put on plain black jeans. I looked through my closet trying to find the best top to wear. I finally pulled out a blue sweater with two yellow stripes. I paired that with a golden necklace, and black, ankle, heeled boots. I pulled out my usual black backpack so that I wouldn't have to carry around a purse on my shoulders. I put in a jean jacket in case it got too cold. I also put in some deodorant, mouth wash, a comb, and some gum. Maybe I was over preparing...
Lastly, I put in my phone and lip balm. I reached the door and turned to face my dad's studio on the upper level.
"Dad," I screamed, and he peeped out of his studio and arched his eyebrows in question.
"I'm heading out. Can you take care of Dubu for some time?" I said nervously, pointing to the door. He nodded and began to climb the stairs to reach Dubu. He picked him up and headed back upstairs. I waited till he was inside before I smiled and turned to head out.
"Be back at a decent hour," I heard him shout as I closed the door. I smiled even more broadly and finally headed out.
-
"You aren't feeling cold?" Yoongi asked as soon as he saw me. I shook my head and played with the bag straps hanging from the side.
"So, where are we going?" I asked him as we walked towards the subway station.
"My favorite place in the entire world," He said, walking beside me with his hands stuffed into his pockets. I smiled and turned to face him. He had a stone cold look on his face and I recoiled at the coldness that was emanating from him.
"Are you okay?" I asked, reaching for his wrist and twisting him to face me.
"I've had a bad day," He said, shrugging and taking his hand away from my grip. I pursed my lips and wondered as to what could have gone wrong. He was fine till he was with me at the library.
"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked as I whisked out my orange card and moved through the turnstile.
"I don't know if I am ready to," He said as he mimicked my actions. I nodded, following him as he walked towards the direction of Line 6.
"Then whenever you are, let me know," I said. He turned around, blinked, then smiled.
