Edited 08/27/17I sit in the front seat, my head leaning against the window. I watch the houses as we drive past them on the way to school. I close my eyes, trying to block out my surroundings. I fight the urge to scream at my father, who is driving the car.
I can't do this. Turn around! My school is across town!
The sad reality is it's not. He is perfect on his path to my new school, and I hate it. My parents are motivated to help bring my grades back up, and that means doing everything in their power to keep me away from the people they've decided are distracting me. Not only have the enrolled me in a new school for my senior year, but they've given me a new phone and forbidden contact with my old friends.
Deep in thought, I don't even notice that we have pulled into the new school's parking lot until my dad says my name.
"Calum? We're here pal. Ready for a new adventure?" he says enthusiastically. My dad is a real nerd. Everything is an adventure, a new bridge to cross, a new challenge to overcome. Sometimes I want to rip the girly posters he's hung around the house, and shove the motivational words written on them up his ass.
I grunt in response to his question and I hear his sigh. I can tell he's frowning, even without looking his way.
"Calum, I know it's hard for you to move to a new school," he says placing his hand on my shoulder. I stop him there.
"You don't know anything!" I shout, pushing his hand off my shoulder forcefully, "You are only doing his for yourself. You don't care about me," I turn to push the car door open and jump out of the large vehicle, slamming the door hard behind me.
I walk to the school fast, my feet heavy and my fists balled up by my sides. I stalk into the building and turn my head to find the office. I walk towards the large room on my left, opening the door and letting myself in. The lady sitting at the desk closest to the door looks up at me and smiles in a friendly way that puts me at ease. I try to smile back, but it's really weak, anger still flowing through my veins.
"How can I help you dear?" she asks me kindly. I walk towards the desk and inform her that I am a new student. She nods, as if she already knew, and turns to find some sheets. She helps me register after I inform her that neither my mother nor my father are here to help. The registration is quick, and when we're done, she hands me a few extra sheets.
"These will help you find your way around the school," she says, pointing at two maps - one for each floor, "this is your time table accompanied by course outlines," she points to a pile of charted paper. She continues explaining and leans back in her chair, smiling at me again. "You're all set Mr. Hood," she tells me, punching my name into the system, "I hope you have a fantastic first day here at Willis High!" I smile at her and thank her as I leave the office.
I use the maps she gave me to navigate my way to my locker. According to the highlights on the map, it should be close to the front of the school. I finally find the hall it's in and sigh in relief. I walk down, counting each locker. When I get to where mine should be, I find a group of nicely pampered boys.
I tap the closest boy on the shoulder and their conversation stops abruptly. The boy I tapped turns slowly to look at me, pushing his blonde curls out of his eyes. He looks at me as if confused why I touched him. Who does he think he is?
"Can I help you?" He asks annoyed, after a few moments of silently glaring at each other. I mirror his exact position in front of me, hands on hips, raised eyebrow, head cocked to one side.
"Yes actually. I would be happy if you and your posse moved so I had access to my locker" I see a blue haired boy snicker from the back of the small group and I hold back the urge to wipe that smile of his chubby little face.
