"Jay and (Y/N) will go to the back and watch for zombies." Destiney was shouting orders. "Julia and Gavin will go in the middle. Gavin, you keep a lookout, too and I'll lead. Julia, you should stay close to me," She finished, looking prideful.
She probably thinks Julia is too... Vulnerable. And I think she's right, I thought, seeing Julia's wide eyes and hearing her thumping chest.
"O-Okay," she said, staying right behind Destiney.
Everyone else nodded their approval and got into position and started trekking along the school, ears and eyes out for any living thing.
"No one should see us," Destiney announced quietly. "The classrooms and gym are locked shut."
"Right, we know," I snapped. How should she know? "It would be dumb if they left them open."
She glared at me through narrowed eyes. "It was just in case you needed to know," she said coldly, in a tone that didn't invite further arguments. You're running your mouth just to hear your own voice.
Tension broke between us all. Julia squeaked with fear when we heard a moaning sound around the corner.
"(Y/N)! Get the katana out!" Destiney ordered. Even though I hate taking orders from somebody else, I got the katana out. "Let's go." Destiney led us around.
Julia shrieked in protest. "There's a zombie around there and we're going to it?!"
"It's the only exit safe, as far as I'm concerned," Destiney told her, then gazed at Jay and I, her eyes hardening. Yes! It is! We know no other exit. But still...
"Yes, but there could be more than one zombie," I pointed out. Sorry.
"Look," Destiney said, sounding frustrated, "if it's just one zombie, we can fight it off, alright? If there's more than two, we will go back and scout out another exit. Deal?"
"Only if you do at least some of the fighting," I muttered under my breath.
"What?" Destiney asked sharply.
"I said nothing. You're hearing things," I replied coldly.
Destiney narrowed her eyes. "Let's go. It'll be okay, Julia. I'll protect you."
By not fighting, I thought, flexing my hand that was not on the katana. I went after Julia, still looking around for the zombie.
"I see it! It's so ugly!" Julia whispered/ squeaked.
"Let me fight it off," Jay told me, hand out for the katana.
"What? No! I'm the fighter! If I get bitten, you can be the fighter and throw me out!" I argued, taking the case off the katana and putting it in Jay's hand.
"We'd never throw you out!" He shouted.
"Still," I said impatiently. Before Jay could respond, I whipped around and headed for the zombie, getting in front of Destiney. "Good luck! I know you'll fight it off," she whispered as I passed.
I smiled, feeling warm at her compliment. "Thanks." I hope it's only 1 or 2 zombies. I wouldn't be able to fight off more even if Destiney cheered me on.
