We're screwed, we're screwed, we're fucking screwed, I thought, horrified. Destiney grabbed my hand, which made me jump. "What?"

Destiney couldn't talk. She just shook her head, but I saw her eyes light up. Her mouth dropped open as she scrambled to explain a "plan."

"What is it?" Jay asked, his voice high with fear.

Destiney huffed. "Didn't you bring a gun? If kill enough of them, their bodies will block the doorway!" She clearly didn't think that through.

I scowled. "Then how will we get out?" I know we're wasting time, but we're probably going to end up dead.

"That'll give us enough time to unjam the door!" Destiney answered, narrowing her eyes at me. After my hesitation, she rolled her eyes and grabbed a gun from Jay.

Jay and Destiney used far-off weapons; Destiney a crossbow and Jay a machine gun with plenty of ammo. However, I used a machete.

I quickly rolled out of reach as a zombie approached, groaning. It was a male, and it looked like a worker. I felt vulnerable under my light clothing, but I figured I was fast enough to escape their grips.

I twisted my arm and stabbed the man, feeling adrenaline rush through my veins. It felt good as the energy came to me. I felt like I could run a marathon and stab zombies at the same time.

A zombie reached out to grab my arm. Quickly, I cut their arm off. They yelped in anger and pain. That didn't stop me. I kicked them in the legs and ripped their hair from their head.

The first time I wince in a battle. I ripped off a woman's hair! Right from the scalp! I felt horrible and scrambled to get away from the hair as much as possible.

"(Y/N), what do you think you're doing?!" Destiney called, pushing the trigger. "Get back and fight those zombies! Don't cower behind us!"

I sliced at her with my machete. "Sorry! I thought you were a zombie!" That was a lie. She can't tell me what to do. I'm on my own, shitheads.

Destiney shrieked and let go of her gun. I felt satisfaction, but then realized with dread that that type of scream wasn't from a tiny scratch.

"Destiney!" Jay screeched, coming to help her.

I went over there too. "This is all my fault!" I kicked down a zombie and stabbed its head.

Jay gasped, rummaging his hand through Destiney's arm. There seemed to be another scratch on her arm. A scratch from a zombie.

"I'm sorry, Destiney!" I screamed, grabbing her by her hands and throwing her across the room, ignoring Jay's indignant protests.

Destiney shrieked. "I'm still alive, what are you-?" It ended with a muffled scream of agony as zombies tore into her skull.

I grabbed Jay by the hand and pulled him to the wide-open door. "It would be safer if we unjammed that other door!" Jay protested.

"Yeah, but that could take a few minutes," I yelled back. "I won't risk you, too!" Then, I led him back up the escalator and we hurried to the trapdoor, escaping two more hungry zombies.

Destiney, one of my closest friends, is now zombie food.

Julia and Gavin pulled us up and made sure we had no bites or scratches. I told Julia I was fine, but she shook her head and continued to check.

"Where's Destiney?" Gavin asked quietly once we were all checked out. I shook my head, unable to find the right words.

Jay glared at me. "(Y/N) decided to throw her into the zombies." How could he be so flat? I didn't decide- I had no choice.

But they didn't seem to believe Jay. Gavin rolled his eyes wearily. "I mean- what actually happened?" As much as I wanted to lie and say it was an accident, I told them the the truth.

"Destiney was either bitten or scratched. I had to give her to them. Would you rather us both die?" That last question was directed to Jay.

He looked away, still cold. "I'd rather die than give Destiney away."

The wind stilled, though it felt even more cold than before. At first, I couldn't say anything. This was basically a confession from the guy I love. Then, I managed to spit out, "Then why didn't you just kiss her?"

Jay was red, but before he could say anything, I ran to the trapdoor and stomped down the halls, not caring if a zombie comes out and rips me apart.

I heard Jay and Julia calling my name, but I didn't turn around to face him. Instead, I picked up my pace until I was running. These guys don't need me. And I don't need them.

I was so angry that I forgot to be careful. I smell a horrible stench of rotting flesh and quickly draw out my katana just in case. I feel my eyes become wet with tears, but I wipe them away.

I paused and looked around. There was an escalator in front of me, and it leads down to a narrow hallway with stores on each side. At the end of the hallway, I saw a wide-open door with a bright green exit sign.

Before thinking, I hurried down the escalator, stumbling, and breathed a sigh of relief. The machine is slow, so I had to run down it and the hallway.

I heard nothing except the sound of my own footsteps and felt my heart pounding through my chest. I flashed through the exit door and tripped over some wire that left me tumbling to the ground. My last thought before I passed out was, Why was that exit door wide open in the first place?
