It was the same night of the lacrosse game.
The same night the Beast had appeared and hurt Scott and Liam out on the lacrosse field and chased everyone inside.
I was trying to fight the Beast on my own until Scott healed enough to come and find us and help me. The Beast threw me down the school steps in the hallway. I rolled across the floor into the wall, kneeling up, in a crouch, looking up, letting my eyes glow blue, growling. The Beast was at the top of the stairs, growling. It ran up the next flight of stairs. I growled angrily, running up the stairs after him.
*****
More people were running into the school, screaming.
A girl tripped, sliding back away from the double doors, scratches in her face, terrified.
I helped the girl stand, leading her into the nearest classroom. "Come on." The girl couldn't stand anymore, falling to the floor. I closed the classroom door. I was bleeding from my head, blood staining and drenching my brunette, almost black hair. I looked at the girl. The girl looked at me in relief, though she was still horrified. I heard growling from outside the classroom, turning my head toward the door, bracing the door closed. The Beast started to tear at the door. I tried to keep the door closed, looking at the girl. "Go. Go out the window. Go." The girl scrambled up to her feet, running toward the window, looking back at me. "Go!"
The girl crawled out of the window.
The window above the door shattered, the glass falling over my head.
The Beast punched through the door to claw into my arm, making me groan in pain, pulling me through the door out into the hallway.
*****
I ran into the library, breathing heavily, hearing the Beast growl in the distance. I sat back against a table, trying to catch my breath long enough to calm down, and heal, so I could fight this thing.
A girl was hiding in the library stacks.
I looked around, seeing more people hiding.
Scott ran inside to help me.
I gestured around the library.
Scott looked around everyone. "Go upstairs."
Everyone stood, running upstairs to the balcony above the library.
We heard the Beast in the distance, growling, hearing the approaching footsteps.
Scott and I stood ready together, looking from each other to the door.
The Beast burst inside, roaring.
Scott and I shifted. Scott had red eyes, and I had blue. All of us had our canines out. We both roared.
*****
The Beast threw Scott into a library stack, making him fall to the floor. It grabbed me, throwing me into a table, making it shatter into splinters and me fall to the floor. I groaned in pain, holding my hands over the slash marks in my stomach and side.
Scott looked up at the Beast, growling, running closer, jumping into the air, slashing into the Beast repeatedly. The Beast threw Scott back into the steps behind him. Scott groaned in pain, breathing heavily, turning to face the stairs underneath him, pushing himself up.
Scott and I stood. We stood together to face the Beast.
The Beast walked closer, standing on its back legs, growling.
Scott and I growled.
Liam jumped up behind the Beast, punching him in the face with both hands.
Scott and I jumped into the air, tackling the Beast to the floor. The Beast pushed us off to the floor next to Liam. He was suddenly shot in the back repeatedly.
Scott, Liam and I turned to see Braedan and Malia walking closer.
Braedan was the one with the shotgun, shooting the Beast repeatedly.
Liam ducked to the floor next to Scott and me so we wouldn't get shot in the crossfire.
The Beast turned to face Braedan, growling.
Braedan continued to shoot him in the chest, not seeming to have much effect.
Malia shifted, letting her eyes glow blue, her canines drew, roaring.
Braedan continued to shoot the Beast.
The Beast growled, running up the steps toward the wall of windows, leaping out of it, shattering them, falling out of the view to the ground outside.
Malia ran toward us. Malia and Liam helped Scott and me stand, because we were both hurt badly from the attacks from the Beast.
We walked toward Braedan.
"You didn't seriously think you'd have a chance against that thing, did you?" Braedan asked.
"No," Scott answered.
I looked at the broken wall of windows, smirking. "But I got its scent."
We all looked out of the broken wall of windows, knowing that we could follow it and find out who it was when it turned back to human.
*****
I walked quickly through the hallway toward the school exit.
Liam and Scott followed.
"Tara, wait," Scott told me. "You're hurt." I opened the door. "Tara, you gotta slow down."
I shook my head, walking outside.
Scott and Liam followed.
We ran out into the parking lot.
I was leading the way, following the scent to a black car, stopping.
Scott and I broke open the trunk of the black car.
A pair of shoes were inside.
Scott picked up the shoes, showing us that they had blood on the soles.
The shoes that we had been looking for.
Scott looked at us, sighing.
I tilted my head barely, closing the trunk of the car.
Mason walked closer in confusion. "Scott? Tara? What are you doing in my car?"
We looked at Mason in shocked denial.
"It's you," Scott told him.
Mason looked at us in confusion. "What? Liam, what's he talking about?" Liam was disconcerted, in denial that the Beast was his best friend. "Liam?"
Cory was hidden by the red car next to us, becoming visible, grabbing Mason by the shoulders.
"No, wait," I told him. "Wait!" Cory made both him and Mason blend in with our surroundings. "Cory, wait!"
I ran toward the spot where they had been, but I didn't feel anything.
Liam and Scott ran toward me.
We looked around, knowing that Cory and Mason were gone, and that Mason was the Beast.
And if Cory and Mason were gone, we couldn't protect Mason from the Dread Doctors, or save him from fully becoming the Beast.
How were we going to find Mason, or save him from becoming the Beast, or from the Dread Doctors?
If we didn't, then Mason would be gone forever, and a lot more people were going to die.
