— "NOW
why would they make the first day of school a friday? isn't that just mental?" i asked my friend maya as we made our way through the crowded halls of the hell hole we call high school.
"i don't know nora, ask principal maverick if it really bothers you that much." she said with obvious sarcasm in her voice. she knew how much i hated this school, in fact, i hated all of southern california. i live in westlake village, and unfortunately attend westlake high school. a high school where if your parents make tons of money, you fit in!
we have one hell of a sports program though. our football team has won many state championships, and our baseball team has been undefeated for the past four years. the captain of the team, aka captain of the rich kids, is christian yelich. he's a very good all around baseball player don't get me wrong, but he's a complete asshole. he's slept with every girl besides me in this damn school, and hasn't managed to keep one girlfriend since 7th grade. he walks around like he's the shit, and his mom makes a crap load of money being a real estate agent in the city.
he has two younger brothers, so i guess the people in their grades have to deal with the whole yelich arrogance too.
"nora, i think we have the same homeroom!" she said as she looked at my schedule.
"cool, i don't think i can go another moment without being with you." i said as i rolled my eyes. i love my bestfriend, i really do. but sometimes, she annoys the shit outta me, including today. maya looked like a complete hoe today, and ever since her and her boyfriend broke up, she's been one. she dated this kid brandon from our rival school, oaks christian high. it's a private school closer to thousand oaks, westlake was more out of town. i'm gonna just let her do what she wants though, as long as it's not killing her, i couldn't care less. we both walked to homeroom together, and we saw the popular kids.
i didn't say a word. i walked to a seat in the back of the room, and put my headphones in. i never liked any of the rich kids, not because i was jealous or anything, it's because they were total dickheads. they put other people down, so they can feel better about themselves. it's completely pathetic. i saw maya talking to ryland, one of yelich's best bros. "god, please if you're hearing this, don't let them hook up. please." i whispered to myself. a few moments later a smiling maya jane callisto came up to me, offering me a deal.
"nora, bestfriend, my favorite person ever, the love of my-" she said as i cut her off.
"what do you want bozo." i said with a laugh.
"so, jason just invited me to a party, and told me i can bring a plus one, which is obviously you! it's tonight at 7, at christian's house. you down?" she asked. i almost choked on the water i was drinking.
"are you serious?! maya, ryland?! ryland fucking washington?! and christian?!" i couldn't believe she would even ask me.
"please! for me! just this one time, i promise. come have a little fun for once nora! your parents are the most chill people ever, if i were you i would go to every party i heard about. your parents let you do whatever the fuck you want, and you know it. so will you please just go?" she begged. i'm not going to lie, she does have a point. my parents are very laid back, but that's taught me to not take advantage of them. i know they'd let me go, but i didn't really want to go.
"fine. i'll fucking go, only this once maya." i said. a smile quickly grew on her face.
"yay! thanks love you!" she said as she hugged me and made her way out of the class.
"wait where are you going?" i asked.
"i'm not in this homeroom, i just wanted to see jason." she whispered to me. that little bitch.
"uh hello?" i heard a voice say breaking me out of my thought.
"what?"
"sorry if i interrupted your thinking." the boy said with a laugh. his face didn't look familiar, but he surely was cute.
"it's ok." i said with a giggle.
"i'm apollo, apollo norton. i just moved here from sacramento." the smiling boy said.
"i'm nora, nora briar. i've been in westlake all my life sadly." i said, trying to mock him. i kept on catching christian look over to me. we would make awkward eye contact, then he would look away and continue talking to his girlfriend quinn. stupid bitch.
"well nora, how's life here? i know SoCal is mostly 'surfs up' and 'chill' according to all the people here." he asked.
"i personally hate it. nobody here has any intelligence. they're all rich assholes who think that their parents can get them through life." i said as i glared at the clique sitting at the front of the room.
apollo must have saw and he turned to look.
"i'm guessing you're talking about them?" he asked.
"was it obvious?" i asked.
"yeah a little." he said as he smiled.
"what's life like upstate? i heard it rains a lot! it must be nice, it barely rains here. and don't you guys get snow? that must be cool to like snowboard in!" i said. the boy started to laugh.
"what's so funny?" i asked.
"you just... you're cute when you're talking about topics you have an interest in. it's adorable." he said. i blushed so hard my face must've been pink.
"t-thanks." i said. did i just stutter? i never stutter. what was this boy doing to me? the bell rang which ended most of the conversations in room. our teacher, miss roman came to the room and took attendance.
"nora?"
"here." i said. christian turned his head and looked back. he gave a slight smile, but it quickly faded once he saw apollo and i talking. what was his deal today?
i've never talked to that boy a day in my life, and i don't plan on it. apollo and i started talking about politics while we heard the names of our fellow classmates being called. i was focused on him, and i didn't give a shit about what else was going on.
"apollo."
"apollo?"
"excuse me, mr.norton!" said miss roman. we both snapped out of our conversation.
"sorry, i uh, i'm here." apollo said as he quickly turned his attention back to me.
"mr.norton, you are from sacramento, yes?" she asked. he rolled his eyes and turned towards her.
"yes ma'am." he said nonchalantly.
"well why don't you come up to the front of the class and tell us a little bit about yourself!" she said as she pointed to the front. i laughed and he gave me a little push as he made his way up.
"well um. im apollo. im 17, i play soccer, and i play guitar. i like old movies, and yeah that's pretty much it." he said as he started to come back to his seat but he stopped once he heard a question being called out.
"why are you talking to such scum like nora briar?" i heard a familiar tone ask. it was quinn.
"that's enough miss cooper!" the teacher said as she tried to drop the situation, but apollo had a reply.
"no it's fine miss roman. uh it's quinn, right?" he asked as the red headed bitch nodded.
"well quinn, nora is actually a great person. a person who is intelligent, and intellectual, and doesn't use the amount of money that comes in her household give her an excuse to be a total ass to everyone else." he said. the whole room went silent. quinn rolled her eyes, and looked back at me. ryland and christian did not seemed pleased, but i don't think apollo cared. he came back to his seat next to mine and gave me a smile. the second bell rang and we all made our way to our first period class. maybe homeroom wouldn't be that bad this year.
