"They call us problem child,
We spend our lives on trial,
We walk an endless mile,
We are the Youth Gone Wild.
We stand and we won't fall,
We're one and one for all,
The writing's on the wall,
We are the Youth Gone Wild."
-"Youth Gone Wild" Skid RowThat following Monday, after school, Dean was helping Bobby fix up an old Cadillac. The garage smelled like oil and exhaust and his jeans and red button up were stained with it. Bobby was working hard under the beautiful green Cadillac and his small radio was blaring Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers. Dean stood watching Bobby, waiting for him to ask for another wrench or handkerchief and sipping a Coca-Cola when a thought came to him. "Bobby?"
"Yeah?" Bobby's voice was loud but welcoming.
"How did you and Ellen meet?"
Bobby slid from under the car to look up at Dean, his face blotched with black oil. "What in the world brought that up?"
"I don't know." Dean stammered. He fiddled with the tab on his soda can. "I met someone."
"Really? What's her name?" Bobby stood up, walking over to the cooler to grab a cold one.
"Answer my question first. How did you meet Ellen?"
Bobby chuckled. "Boy, you are just as stubborn and hardheaded as your dad."
Dean shifted, uncomfortable with the comment but not wanting to give himself away. Bobby sighed, "I met Ellen up at the Harvelle's Roadhouse a little ways north of here. It was 'round twelve years ago, a little while after I lost Karen. I had a bad habit of stopping for drinks every damn place I went and I stumbled upon that old dump. Ellen served me drinks 'til she refused to serve me any more. Said I'd lose my liver one day. She and I talked past closing time. Ellen had told me about poor Bill and how he left her with a daughter and a bar to manage. I told her about Karen and somehow we found something in common and just went from there. I couldn't stop dropping by and checking on them until I eventually asked her to marry me. That what you want to know?"
Dean was listening intently, completely focused on Bobby's story. It was incredible to him. "Yeah, that's amazing, Bobby."
Bobby waved his hand, dismissing him. "Whatever, could ya hand me that bottle opener?" He did and Bobby popped the cap off of the beer bottle, lifting it to his mouth and taking a long drink. "Guess I never really did stop drinking completely like I told her I would." He laughed at the irony.
"Do you think that sort of thing can happen with anyone?" Dean's heart raced at the thought of telling Bobby about Cas.
"Why the hell you askin' me about this for? Don't ya have your mom and dad to talk with 'bout it? I mean, not that I'm complaining, it's just a little out of the ordinary."
Dean scratched at the back of his neck, "Yeah, I've had a lot of 'out of the ordinary' lately. I don't think I can talk with them about it..." He stopped before he could get to his point. Truth was, Dean was unsure of how Bobby might react. He was much more approachable and laid back than his father was, but Dean just couldn't be sure.
Bobby sat on the peeling black leather stool in front of the car, bottle in hand. "Dean, you know there ain't nothin' you can't talk to me about. I don't want you feelin' like you can't trust me. I think of you as my own. And I won't tell your daddy if you don't want me to. Scouts honor. Now what is it that's on your mind?"
Dean sighed with relief. Bobby was a godsend to him. "His name is Cas." He watched as Bobby's expression remained unchanged and he just waited politely for Dean to continue. "I met him on the bus when I first started going to Lawrence and we became really good friends. He told me he was into guys and I kinda figured out that he had a thing for me. Turned out I really liked him too. Anyway, we're kinda together now and he's asked me to go to this party tomorrow at his house."
