I sat in the chair beside Cassadees bed and watched as she moved around uncomfortably. My friend Natasha had come around noon and picked Maddison up. She agreed to watch her for me when I need her to since I have Cassadee in the hospital and she won't be leaving anytime soon. I called my work and told them I couldn't come in for little bit and they were fine with it as was Cassadees school. Around 11:30, after she had been sleeping comfortably, the doctor told me to go home for the night and get some rest and come back in the morning. I reluctantly did as he told me.
---The Next Day---
I came back to the hospital at 6. Visiting hours aren't until 8:30 but I needed to see my little girl. I needed to hear from the doctor that she would be fine. When I got there the doctor was already out in the front room and when he saw me he smiled and waved me over. I walked with him to Cassy's room and he smiled to me when we got just outside her room. "So, is there good news then?" I asked him impatiently.
He smiled bigger than before. "Actually, we have found a perfect match for a kidney." He told me. I smiled and he continued. "Well, you see, because she is a rare blood type it would be harder to find a new kidney and we may not have found one in time. However, there is someone in your family who is a perfect match and has everything perfect for the recipient. This is very good news so I'll just come out and say it. Her sister!" He told me excitedly.
I smiled at the thought that she would be okay. Then I frowned at the thought that her sister would go through pain with her. "But Maddison is only 5. Isn't there someone else?" I asked, already knowing the answer.
He frowned. "Well, there may have been if we knew the fathers medical history and perhaps a few members of his family." He told. He put his hand on my shoulder. "I'm afraid this is our only option right now. You can wait it out and see if another exact match comes along but I fear the worst in this case."
I sighed. "Okay, well I have to think about this. I need to think about what's best for both of them." I told him. "Are you sure she can live on only one kidney?" I asked.
He smiled. "It's not unheard of for children to live on one kidney. More and more children are even being born with only one kidney these days so it should be fine. I can't promise anything because it's unprofessional of me and it's also not a guarentee, but I do promise that should you go through with this procedure, your girls will receive the best treatment available." He told me. I don't know why but for some reason I believed him one hundred percent.
I nodded. "Okay, well I will talk to some family members and get a few other perspectives before I make my decision."I told him before going into the room.
---Two days later---
I had talked to 6 different members of my family and friends and they all agreed that I should take one of Maddison's kidneys and put it in Cassy. They said that it would make them stronger as sisters. I haven't said a word about the situation to Maddy. I don't want her to stress about it the way I have been the last two days.
I was talking to my sister Theresa and I asked her about what I should do. "I think you should just come straight out and ask Maddy what she wants to do. Just explain it to her and make sure she understands every part of what she's about to do before you just agree to letter do it." She told me honestly.
I sighed. "What if she doesn't want to do it though?" I asked curiously.
"Then we find another donor who matches. What about their dad? I know you don't really wanna talk to him but maybe just suck it up and call him. I mean, it's worth being uncomfortable for a few minutes if it means that it will save your child right."
I sighed. "Yea, of course it is. I just, I don't want either of them to go through that kind of pain for even one minute." I told her.
She grabbed my hand and gave me a sweet smile. "But if you don't think quickly then they will. I mean, if you decide to wait for a donor then Cassy will be in pain every day for weeks before she gets better. And if you decide to let Maddy do it then it's on,y a few short days for both. I know you are having a lot of troubles deciding what to do but I know you will do what's best for both girls. Just...trust your motherly instincts."
