The bag sitting on my shoulders is heavy, pulling my back as I run next to the train. An arm hangs out of the cart next to me and I grab it as I jump. The arm belongs to Uriah, he greets me with a large smile and a pat on the back. I smile back as best I can but my stomach flips and churns and I take a seat on the floor next to Christina. There is no sign of Will. "Where is he?" but she just shakes her head and leans against me. I cautiously place an arm around her, not really sure of what else to do.
"He didn't want to come..." I can hear the anger in her voice, and the sorrow.
"It's okay, he doesn't have to, we have enough people here anyway." I know that's not why she is upset, but what am I supposed to say? 'Your boyfriend is a tool who won't do anything to help stop a possible war,' it may be the truth but it wouldn't help, I've never been cut out for Candor.
We spend the rest of the train journey in silence, there is only the occasional mumble coming from the other people on the train. Most of them look as nervous as I feel, some look worse.
The train slows and we all jump off, Christina and I jump of holding hands, like we did the first time we jumped. After a few steps to regain our balance we run to catch up with the others. We head straight to the hub. everything is hectic. All of Abnegation have been instructed to move into houses surrounding the hub so we have less of an area to protect. Some families have been moved into the Hub, others are now sharing homes with other families, apparently there are up to three families per house in some streets. This would only work here, no other faction would be capable of living in such close proximity without causing arguments, apart from possibly Amity, but why would they ever need to? No one would ever want to attack Amity. Then again, I would have said the same thing about Abnegation less than a month ago. When we get the the Hub we line up at the registration table. Apparently it was decided to stagger the times when people would leave to try to avoid too much suspicion. When we get to the table we are given a role and sent to the arms table. Some one thought to bring guns with them. Zeke stands behind the table.
"Four told me to send you to him when you got here," he explains as he passes me a gun and a knife as well as a couple of rounds. "he's in the Hub, he's practically running this thing." After thanking Zeke and agreeing to meet Christina when I can I run over to the Hub.
Tobias is stood in the entrance, talking to his father and to mine, as well as other members of the government. They appear to be arguing. T.he door slams behind me and they all stop to stare. I'm willing the floor to swallow me hole when Tobias calls me over. I make my way across the grey stone floor and stand next to him. They all stare at me. then Tobias says calmly,
"Would you please explain to them why it is important that they tell us about this 'event' they are planning. If this is the reason they are going to be attacked we need to know, it will help up to protect them. They don't seem to understand..."
"Tobias, we do understand what you are saying but it won't make any difference, we have some information which we would like to share with everyone but Erudite don't want people to know, do now that is all you need to know." Marcus speaks and the others all nod. Of course they would. Abnegation see the accumulation of unnecessary knowledge as self serving. This is going to be a hard argument to win.
"We need to know because it could effect there tactics. we need to know how many people know, we need them to be placed in safe houses, any information or evidence needs to be backed up, we will need hard copies and several versions hidden within the software, Tobias is good with computers he can do that. If you are planning on telling everyone anyway I don't see why it needs to wait, if you want to wait until you tell everyone that's okay, but asking us to protect you and giving us nothing in return is a fairly selfish way of dealing with things." They flinch at the word 'selfish' and I see them all considering my words. All of them except for Marcus.
