They did okay... Well they all fell off at least once, two of them got stuck in the caves and one of them almost drowned, but apart from that they did okay. None of them completely gave up but some did avoid some of the more difficult challenges.
"So what do you think of them?" I looked at Tobias as I asked, the face I had grown to know and love had been replaced by the hard face of the instructor I first met.
"They could be all right, some of them will be fine, they just need more confidence, others are already starting to irritate me." He places a hand on the small of my back, he is really bad at sticking to the rules.
"Who's irritating you?"
"The boy in the hoody over there by the water. He keeps on laughing when the others mess up, but he's hardly done anything himself after he's been round once." I know who he is talking about.
"Why don't you go and have a word with him?"
"I'd rather be talking to you..." He puffs out his bottom lip and bats his eye lids.
"I'll come too." For some reason I feel annoyed at him. This isn't how he is supposed to be, he shouldn't be cracking jokes, he should be scaring the hell out of them, but helping them at the same time, perhaps us two paring up for training was a bad idea.
We walk over to him.
"So, are you too good to be training?" Tobias asks, sounding a little more like the person he should. If we want these people to get through initiation we need to be tough on them. We need to look strong so they known what you need to pass.
"No... I... I have been..." the boy stammered.
"Why did you stop?" His face starts to go red and he looks down at the floor. It takes me a second to realise that he isn't looking at the floor but at his ankle, it is very swollen and purple, I honestly don't know how he is still standing.
"It kinda hurts... I know I should keep going but it's hard to..." He doesn't look at us. If someone had done the sane thing last year they would have been punished for it, but not now, we are going back to the old Dauntless days. In the past it would be seen as wise to stop when you can't continue. It is not a sign of weakness to know when you are beaten. That is what we are trying to teach.
"Right, Tris will take you down to the hospital."
"No, I'm fine..." He starts to protest.
"If you were fine you'd still be going." I interject. "You need to train so you need to get that looked at. Let's go." He grumbles but follows, limping heavily.
Once were outside the room most of his composure vanishes. I sigh but it's a long walk to the hospital so I offer him my arm to lean on.
"You okay?" He nods and doesn't accept my help, he might not be as bad as I thought. "What's your name then?" I ask, wanting to break the silence.
"Thomas," He winces.
"You from Amity?" He nods, I'm obviously not going to get much conversation out of him so I stop trying. I help him down the side of the pit despite him insisting that he can do it on his own. I'm determined that this year no initiates will die, I'm not going to let him fall off the side of the pit because he is too stubborn to let me help him.
