I watched the fire as it burned creating comforting warmth washing over Ashton and myself. We sat in silence as lightning lit up the dry night sky.
“Lu?” he murmured causing me to shift to my back so that I could see him as my head rested in his lap.
“Yeah?” I asked hardly keeping my eyes open.
“We should go on in, it’s getting late.” And even though my eyes were closed I could feel his eyes studying my face.
“Yeah,” I said as I opened my eyes and sat up, turning my body a little so I could face him. “It is pretty late.” I said, trying not to look away from his stare that seemed to read my eyes like it was his first language. His eyes moved away from mine, only to study every other part of my face, finally resting on my lips.
And let me tell you, I’ve read enough books to know what that’s supposed to mean, but let me tell you that I wasn’t scared, not for a second. I was nearly dying of happiness when he slowly started to lean in. It wasn’t like I was making a conscious effort to, but I found myself leaning in, until we were close enough his warm, minty breath was fanning my mouth. Just as my eyes were closed, the rain came. Not metaphorically, or in some deeper meaning. No, the bottom fell out, and we were instantly soaked. My face scrunched up, as the rain got even harder, and I opened my eyes.
“I- ah- we should a- we should go inside!” Ashton screamed to me over the rain.
“Yeah!” I screamed back as we walked to the sliding glass doors and quickly scrambled inside. “I’m soaking wet.” I said looking down at my drenched clothing.
Ashton chuckled in response and started walking toward the hallway.
“Wait where are you going its dark, I can’t see anything! I don’t know my way around here in the pitch black dark!” I squealed as I walked quickly to catch up with him. “Ow! My toe! “ I groaned as it jammed into an end table.
“Stay here before you hurt yourself anymore; I’m going to go get towels.” He laughed to himself.
So I felt my way back to the big living room couch, and thought about how much things would have changed if that half a centimeter of space wouldn’t have been there. What would happen? Would I have to move out? I’m only sixteen for goodness sake! I can’t move out. Well I did get all that money from my grandma, was it my grandma? I don’t even remember it’s been so long since all that happened. I could use that to live on? Get it together Lucy! You’re being ridiculous. They wouldn’t ask you to move out! It didn’t even happen. Move on!
“Here you go.” Ashton broke my thoughts, offering me a towel and I remembered that I was freezing cold from the rain.
“Thanks.” I mumbled as I watched his push the coffee table out of the way, and spread out one fluffy blanket after another onto the living room rug, finally he laid out a sheet, tucking the corners under the other fluffy blankets creating a mattress looking shape, followed by another sheet which he only secured on end under the other blankets, and finally one last fluffy blanket to top it off.
He turned to me with an unsure smile, “I thought we could sleep down here tonight?”
A small smile found its way onto my lips and I nodded, “Oh, I got some of my pajamas for you to wear.” I smiled and grabbed them, standing from the couch and walking unsurely into the darkness. “I’ll walk you to the bathroom.” His words were coated with an amusement that made me want to laugh with him.
We walked together to the bathroom, as I clutched his hand afraid I’d be lost in the monstrous house. “Here you are.” He said gesturing to the bathroom door in front of us.
“Thanks, could you uh- wait for me to get done?” I asked looking down at my toes wiggling on the hard wood floors.
“Yeah, sure.” He shrugged, but I could hear his smirk.
I stepped into the bathroom, flicking on the light switch and looking at my drenched figure in the large mirror. Picking up my limp wavy hair and letting it go to inspect just how awful I look. Shrugging, I peeled of my wet clothes, and replaced them with the soft new clothes Ashton brought me. After looking at myself in the mirror once more and making a few failed attempts at improving my hair, I walked out of the large bathroom to see Ashton in all his glory leaning against the wall. The light from the bathroom made him appear to glow and I couldn’t help but laugh at the thought of Ashton looking angelic. I was brought out of my thoughts by his throat clearing through a smirk. If that’s even possible.
“Ready?” He asked offering his hand out to me, and for the first time that night I was thankful for the fact that the dark was as thick as mud so that he couldn’t see my blush.
We walked in the comfortable sound of our feet tapping against the hard wood floor with hands intertwined. I didn’t even realize that we were back in the living room until Ashton was tugging me onto the pallet he made.
“What were you think about it?” he asked as I sat down crisscross apple sauce with him.
“You know- uh- rain and stuff.” I said causing Ashton to give me a smirk.
“Yeah, and stuff.” He laughed at me before getting under the covers.
I smiled to myself before following suit. “Shut up Ashton.”
“Only if you make me.” He laughed wrapping one arm around me and pulling me to him as I almost choked on my own spit.
“Go to sleep idiot.” I mumbled relaxing against the covers.

Slowly my eyes opened to the darkness of the living room, as I realized I must have kicked the covers to the end of the pallet. Slowly I slipped Ashton’s arm off of me as I reached down to grab the covers.
“No, come back.” Ashton whined making me looking his direction, seeing that he was still sound asleep. I smiled and grabbed the covers pulling them up to me. “Ally?”
I froze.
