Chapter Eight ~ Mercedes

"Alright my little art-lings, time's up!" Mrs. Olessi's voice called out, signaling that the detention hour has come to an end. "That's all for today, hope you don't come back tomorrow!"

I smiled down at my piece of art, I had to say that it looked really good, similar to the little square.

"Do you like it?" Ronnie asked, showing me his corner piece of the village, the lines were blurry and the houses were completely sloppy and not even in the right color.

Laughing, I took the piece of card stock. "It looks wonderful. Much better than your stick figures."

"You think so? Cause I'm pretty sure those houses aren't supposed to have a pile of mud on them." He looked at the square like it was garbage.

"It's okay! Really, it is." I looked up to the center table where Mrs. Olessi was collecting the paintings. "Come on, let's go."

I walked over and handed them to her, Ronnie trailing behind me.

"Wow Riya, this looks amazing!" Mrs. Olessi took mine into her hands, smiling at it.

"Oh thank you," I blushed, letting my hair hide my face.

"Have you ever thought of entering in the downtown art show? A lot of new artists are found there."

I smiled at her, feeling elated that she thought my work was good enough for the Atlanta Art Fair. It was an honor to be in it and I knew I could get in if I tried, but that just wasn't my passion. "Thank you, but no, art isn't my true passion, music is." She nodded and moved on to another table.

"You play an instrument?" I heard Ronnie's surprised voice behind me. I turned around to face him and saw that he had his eyebrows knit together into a thinking line.

"Yeah, I play the piano, flute, and the cello, but mostly piano for recitals and everything."

I watched confusedly as he muttered something under his breath. "The girl in the music room."

    "Excuse me?"

His face looked like he clicked all the pieces together in place. "The girl in the music room playing Beethoven. Was that you?"

I raised my eyebrows, "You mean when Aaron showed up and completely ruined my mood to play?"

He laughed and settled into a heart melting smile, "Yes, I suppose that is you. Well then, based on what Aaron has told me, you play beautifully."

Suspicious, I gave him a curious look. "Really? He seemed like an egotistic jerk face at the time..."

"Oh yeah, he um," Ronnie cleared his throat, "talked a lot about that uh, moment."

Hmmmm. That is most definitely crazy.

There was an odd and surprisingly awkward silence between us. "Well, um, I should get going. Got a lot of homework to do. The advantage of having advanced classes!" I laughed nervously.

He seemed like he snapped out of a daze. "Yeah! Yeah, of course."

"Right well," I grabbed my bag, slinging it over my shoulder, "see you tomorrow I guess."
