Omegas.

The more I thought about it the more I realized it might as well say captive slaves. Even as I thought it, I realized it was something I had already known and just hadn't accepted. I wondered about the old guy in the manger's office, Omega Steven. I reaffirmed my personal commitment then and there that I would never be an omega.

I watched as Beta became aware of the guards. He headed over to them. I could smell his pleasure in them from where I was. I couldn't make out what he said. Two of the guards stood with smiles. With a nod from Beta, those two headed toward the Cerberus door.

Bodyguard, supervisor, overseer. That's what he said Cerberus meant. Those two, the two Beta had always favored, the two who had worked together that day with the spices... they knew. They knew where to go. Beta hadn't pointed it out to them like he had me. They had lived here back then!

The third guard was being drilled by Beta. Beta's voice got louder.

"If you cannot accept me as your Alpha then why are you here?"

The guard lowered his head even more. I could smell his fear, even from here. I couldn't help grinning to myself. If I'd left Alpha, I wouldn't want to go back either. The thought was sobering.

There were eight guards. We had two, and me. I wasn't sure about counting Lone Wolf. Alpha had us outnumbered. We needed that guard!

I scrambled down, almost sliding when my feet hit pure tile instead of the slight layer of dirt and grass everywhere else. I shifted, grabbing the guard's leg to stop my slide and to spin myself around. I raised myself up enough to whisper in his ear before I had even finished shifting.

"Beta is our Royal and a worthy Alpha. Your hesitation lowers your status. Obey your Alpha, protect the pack."

I shifted back to wolf, knowing Beta had heard my whisper. I glided around until I came up behind Beta, my head against his leg.

Beta was breathing hard. His hand found my head. I leaned in tighter, sighing in contentment. Beta ruled without terror. Choosing between the two alphas was an easy thing for me to do. I felt a slight tug on my ear, causing me to look up.

Beta lowered himself down to my level, taking my head in both hands. Smiling at him was also easy to do. I caught a slight scent of fear from him as he studied me. I lowered myself as I did in the motel laundry room, consciously submitting myself to my Alpha of choice. I didn't understand why he was afraid.

"He's proof that what the Alpha King told you is true."

I hadn't heard or smelled Lone Wolf behind us. Suddenly I did smell what he carried. He didn't come in past the guard so there had to be another way in and out of this section. Of course there was! The common area was for workers! I felt stupid as I realized what should have been obvious.

Suddenly I thought of the omegas. They could escape! I took off suddenly to check on them. Kitchen area, Beta had called it. Looking around at their progress I realized it was more of a snack bar. The smell of cleaning supplies was strong. I growled until I found all three, nosing them. The fresh smell of their fear reassured me.

Smelling Beta and the pizza had me spinning back around. I suddenly realized I had taken off on Beta without permission! I quickly bowed again, exposing my neck even more than before. I slunk down until my belly was on the ground. It wasn't until I started to roll over to expose my belly to him that Beta spoke.
