"Not a good time Bro," Lone Wolf said into his phone. He listened for a minute. "Hang on, I'm going to put you on speaker," he told what could only be his human alpha friend. "You guys aren't going to believe this," he told us as he fiddled with his phone. "Ok, Bro, say it again."
"Which damn part? That kid calls me one more time and I'm gonna frigging scream," complained the gruff voice I remembered.
"What she told you. Tell them what she told you."
"Who's them?"
"The whole pack is here. Get on with it already."
"Damn wolves. Ok, kid called me up, said Lit.."
"The king," Lone Wolf interjected quickly.
"Yeah, whatever. Apparently this girl he befriended had a dream where he was howling and eating a snake and drinking muddy water. She said he was trapped and asked could I go rescue him. What the hell am I supposed to tell the kid? Have you heard from him?"
"No, but we all had the same dream."
"Ya what?"
"Hello," I said, waving Lone Wolf silent for a moment. "We met in the elevator. I'm Scout."
There was a pause before the guy on the other end spoke. "Yeah, I remember you. Making it a good home yet?"
"Working on it every day," I said with a bit of pride. "Listen, what Lone Wolf said, we all had the same dream, everyone who was asleep. All of us. We've been talking about it. Here's what we figured out. He's down in a cave system. There was a cave-in. There are at least two of them there, one was hurt and left behind," I said with a nod to the one guard. I smiled over at Luke as I added, "Wherever they are, its down deep. There was a tiny crack letting in the last of the daylight, and he howled underneath it before he left to try and find help. I think he's trying to find his way out.
"Two of them, huh? Ok, I think I know where to look then, but it's still a damn big territory."
"Do what he was doing," I suggested. "If we wolves howl, then listen for a reply, we might hear him. If..."
"Yeah, we can set up a grid search," he said, cutting me off. "Bro, let me make a few calls. How soon can you get out here?"
Lone Wolf looked at his phone, then looked at me.
"However long it takes him to drive there in that suv of his," I answered for him. "Our Alpha will go, and a few others. The rest of us will wait here."
"Bro?" the man asked.
"Yeah, sounds like a plan," Lone Wolf said, not taking his eyes from me.
"See ya then."
Lone Wolf turned off his phone and returned it to his hidden inner pocket. I couldn't help grinning at him.
"Who did you plan on having go?" the big man asked me slowly.
"Our lord Alpha Maximus of course, and those two guards," I said, pointing to the two who had been raised here with my Max. They were the safest ones to let out into the world. They had no one else and no where else to go. They wouldn't leave Max's side.
Lone Wolf looked at the two guards, slowly nodding. It wasn't until he looked at Max with a raised eyebrow that I realized I should have talked to my Max about it before volunteering his pack to help.
"Forgive me, my lord," I said, "I shouldn't have.."
His hand came up to touch my lips, silencing me.
"We need to go now, just like we needed to go last time. What you told Omega Luke is correct. The message was heard. We weren't the only ones to hear it. I have a feeling many wolves will gather to help, just like when the Council of Royals met. I approve of your choice of guards for me."
He looked self-assured, my Max. He spoke clearly and as if he was in command, as if he had been the one to give the order instead of me. He looked regal and decisive. He looked over to the guards, giving them a reassuring smile. I was probably the only one who could tell he was bluffing his ass off.
Max began giving orders to the guards to secure the females and the omegas. It looked like we were going on lock-down. He smiled reassuringly at Luke before sending him off with the other omegas. "For now," Max told him.
Within moments everyone was moving out of my room, the guards all nervous and excited. Lone Wolf said he'd be back in a few minutes, he was going to get the vehicle ready. And Alpha, Alpha began to slink out of my room after everyone else.
"Wait," I called out.
My Max looked at me, but I couldn't explain myself right away. Max turned to Alpha. "Wait in the common area by the doors. I will give you further instructions there."
Alpha left and it was just me and my Max. I didn't want my Max to leave. I understood then how desperate Alpha must have felt when Max left the first time. I went to my knees, tilting my head to obviously offer my alpha my neck.
"My big mouth should have shut and waited on you, my alpha. I'm sorry."
A throat cleared behind me. I had forgotten about Michael.
"Um, I think I'll make some coffee for Lone Wolf. I'll just, um, let myself out," he said as he slid around the bed and scurried out the door. I knew he understood our need for privacy when he closed the door carefully behind him.
My Max sighed, but didn't say anything for the longest while. I held myself still. I screwed up with him again and again. The least I could do before he headed out was to give him my complete submission. Finally his hand started moving on my head.
"It never occurred to me to hit Alpha on the head that way," he said after awhile.
He sounded amused, not angry, but he also sounded sad. He continued to pet me, his hands slowly getting more aggressive. Suddenly he was pulling on my shoulders and pushing me down toward the floor. If he was testing my submission, I was passing with flying colors. I kept my head tucked in and my neck exposed to him. This wasn't the scent-covering foreplay I enjoyed. This was an alpha asserting his dominance. And he pushed aggressively everywhere.
When he started hitting me, I almost broke my position, but I stopped myself. I had been determined to submit. I had apologized for getting out of line. If he decided I needed punished for it, I would accept it from him. He didn't hit me for long, and after the first few blows, he wasn't even hitting hard. He collapsed on top of me suddenly, sobbing into my chest. My arms went around him automatically.
"I can't," he choked out. "You'd be a much better alpha than I am. I never could discipline my pack properly. I don't know what to do. You do. You always know what to do," he sobbed pathetically.
"You're a wonderful alpha!Don't you ever doubt that! What you don't know you'll learn," I reassured him desperately. "I wouldn't have been able to become who I am without you. Your strength, your calm, and especially your love," I said as I stroked the length of his body as far as I could reach. "You are damn better at leading your pack than Alpha ever was."
"Why did you want Alpha to wait?" he asked as he wiped the tears from his eyes.
I took a breath, full of desire we didn't have time for. I reached out to stroke his face.
"Because while you're gone, I figured he could teach me about being a good Beta. I want to be the best Beta I can be for you! I'll make him explain things. Sometimes I feel like I'm missing stuff that's obvious to you or the guards. I also want to go over the contracts with him, figure out why things are done certain ways. I'll make a list of things that make sense, and things that don't. When you come back, we can review them and you can decide what we keep and what we don't as we go forward."
He looked at me steadily. It seemed to me it was a look full of love. Then suddenly he tickled me! I had to laugh as I squirmed under him. "There's my Scout," he said with satisfaction. "Don't ever go away from me like that again," he commanded.
I smiled at him, glad he didn't really want my submission, even though it was his for the taking. I was content to be in his arms, knowing it couldn't last.
"Never again," I smiled fondly at him.
