Dylan POV
She started driving me, across town. Her radio was blasting some band I didn't know, but Alex just tapped her fingered on the steering wheel to the beat. The radio said it was a band named Styx, but I never heard of them. They might just be some really old rock band I never knew about. Not like I know anything about 80's rock and stuff, but according to my observations Alex does, because the only songs that are in her phone is Styx, Guns and Roses, and Queen, Cheap Trick, Def Leopard, David Bowie and many others. There was only one song that wasn't 80 rock music and it was Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars. I clicked for that song to play. As soon as the song started to play Alex stopped tapping and started to listen. After what seemed like forever, Alex pulled up to a small school, for kids. The school was made of bricks and it had a small playground out front. We walked through the door and straight into the office. The walls in the office were pink, and a big white desk sat in the middle. We signed in and started to walk past a lot of classrooms, each class painted a different color. This was definitely the most colorful place I've been in my life. Then we walked into a fairly large classroom, and Alex hasn't told me what we were doing here yet.The classroom was a bright yellow and there were desks and a blue rug in the center of the room. The teacher in there looked very stressed and tired. As soon as all the small children, probably in the third grade saw Alex they got very excited and rushed to the rug in the center of the room near the white board.
'Good morning class! Hope you all are ready to learn. I hope you don't mind I brought my friend who is also learning sign language too!' She wrote on the board. One girl and one boy read the board at the same time. Alex erased to board and then turned back to the small class of ten children.
Alex signed 'a,b,c' and a little girl raised her small hand and stood up. That's when I realized that from just below the knee down, was a mechanical leg. She started to sign the whole alphabet, and then a boy raised his hand to sign numbers one through ten. Later that day I learned the girls name was Kayla and the boy who had autism was named Carmen. Turns out the classroom we were in was for the kids who couldn't be in other classroom, because they are mentally and/or physically challenged.
. . .
Two hours past and it was time to go home. I got in the drivers seat while Alex sat in the passenger this time."So what got you into teaching asl to kids?"
'Well sign language is a really good skill to learn, and it could help them in the future. I'm also trying to teach it so some of the kids in middle school.' She signed and I nodded.
"So what do you want to do when we get back?" She paused and began to think.
'Well, my dad should be home and I have to go to the grocery store.' I nodded
"If you want we can go to the store now? So you don't have to go back out?" She nodded and I took a right turn into the Stop And Shop parking lot. We walked in and I grabbed a carriage while she led me to the first item on her shopping list. I don't exactly go shopping, like ever, because usually it was boring but with Alex it wasn't so bad.
An hour past and we got:
A bundle of bananas
Ice cream
Cheese
Raw burger meat
Beer
Milk
Apples
Green beans
Lettuce
BatteriesWe quickly checked out and started driving back to Alex's house. She brought the groceries inside and I climbed into the tree house.
It's been three hours and Alex has still not come into the tree house yet. I climb out of the poorly lit tree house and into Alex's room. I could hear her dad yelling over the phone downstairs. I could tell it wasn't Alex due to him saying "stop yelling! Cause I will..." after that I sort of wanted to stop listening because I didn't want to find out what he would do to the person on the phone. Alex wasn't in her room, so for the first time I walked out of her bedroom. I looked down the hall and saw a closed door with the light shinning under it. On the other end were two other bedrooms. I walked toward the single room on the left and knocked on the door. I heard coughing and foot steps. The next thing I know Alex opened the door slightly so only half her face was visible. When she saw who I was she tried to close the door, but I put my foot down so she couldn't. She sighed and opened the door. The room was no bedroom, it was the bathroom, that looked old. It had an odd color of purple on the walls, the floor was white and the toilet was purple along with everything else. The bathroom looked like it was designed during the disco. My gaze finally landed on Alex.
