Chapter Two

I stepped into my flat and put my bag down. I had been thinking about the offer all day. It was weighing heavily on my mind. I knew I had to accept it. I'd be a fool not to. Something told me though that Zac might not see it the same way.

I was aware of a delicious aroma coming from the kitchen. It smelt like Zac was cooking my favourite meal. Pesto stuffed chicken with a side of polenta and sweet potatoes.

"Britt is that you? Come here I've missed you all day."

I walked into the kitchen to the sight of Zac cooking up a storm.

"Nice apron." I teased.

"Hey don't bite the hand that feeds you."

He pulled me in for a kiss.

"Dinner won't be long. Freshen up and I'll get everything ready."

I looked on with admiration. How did I get so lucky. We had grown up together from children to young adults. He was my best friend, my one true love. I was eternally grateful to have him in my life.

Tucking in that night, I was truly stuffed. Zac was in a good mood. I knew I had to broach the subject with him now.

"Zac I've been offered a wonderful opportunity at work."

"Really? That's great Britt. I knew you'd get that promotion one day."

"Well the thing is Zac..."

I hesitated before continuing.

"They offered me the position of foreign correspondent. Problem is the contract is for one year. I'll have to stay in London for at least one year."

I looked at him expectantly waiting for his response.

At first he said nothing. Then all of a sudden he jumped out of his chair and swung me around in his arms.

"Aw Britt I'm so proud of you. You really deserve this so much."

My heart burst with pride. He was proud of my achievements and supported me totally.

"I'll be away for a whole year. Can you handle that?"

"Britt. I'll miss you. No doubt about that but I can't stand in the way of your success. You deserve this and much more. I love you."

Zac always made me feel so secure. For the first time that day I felt excited. My dreams were coming true.

"When do you have to go? Are you still going to make it to Kai's engagement party?"

"Sure thing. I'll be there. I leave in four weeks."

Later that week, I arrived at the engagement party with Zac. I felt nostalgic. I couldn't believe that Kai was getting married. A small smile appeared when I thought about it. I had dated Kai briefly during my separation with Zac. At the end of the day I knew Zac was the only guy for me but Kai was a good guy and I was truly happy for him.

"I'd like to raise a toast to my beautiful fiancée, Veronica. My Ronnie."

Everybody raised their glasses. They truly made a beautiful couple.

"I also like to raise a toast to my new business partner. We worked out the paperwork yesterday. It's official. Zac and Kai's garage is open for business!"

I turned to face Zac. I knew it was always a possibility but I had no idea that it had become a reality.

"Talking about partnerships. When are you and Britt going to make it official. I think we've all waited long enough."

I blushed furiously. Marriage, raising a family with Zac. That was always part of my dream.

"All in good time. Britt knows I'm committed to her."

Of course I knew. We had stuck together through thick and thin. Somehow though I wanted more. I wanted a sign of his commitment. I know in this day and age marriage seemed a different thing but that didn't stop me from hoping.

I had a few more days at home before I had to head back to the city. Zac insisted I follow him to the surf beach for old times sake. After all it would be a year before I would be back.

"C'mon Britt. It will be just like high school. Remember you used to watch me from the shore."

I didn't mind going but I had a few things to wanted to get done. I wanted to spend some time with my parents as well as pack the last few things I needed for London. Hanging down at the beach watching Zac surf was a tempting thought but not an effective use of my time here.

I followed Zac down the beach. He seemed particularly eager. I guessed he didn't have much time for surfing now that he was going into business with Kai.

He pulled his board out of the bag and put in on the sand.

"Be a darling and get the wax. It's in the side pocket there."

I groaned. Not only did he want me to sit here and watch him, he also wanted me to run around for him too. I could have been doing so many more useful things right now.

I unzipped the pocket and felt around. I  couldn't find anything.

"Zac there's nothing in here. Are you sure you got the right pocket."

"Try the other pocket and hurry up. I want to catch some waves today."

I loved him but sometimes he could be so irritating. I put my hand back into the other pocket and searched again.

My hand touched something but it didn't feel like the wax container. It felt softer and square.

I pulled it out and noticed it was a velvet jewellery box.

"Zac?"

I turned around to face him. He was down on one knee.

"Britt since they day I met you, you've been the only girl for me. You're my best friend, my love, my life. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Please say yes. Make me happy."

I looked at the box in my hand.

"Open it." Zac encouraged.

I opened the box and inside was a diamond solitaire engagement ring. It was simple, uncomplicated. Just exactly the way I was. He couldn't have picked out a better ring.

"Britt?"

Zac looked concerned. I must have been standing there not saying anything for a while.

"Will you say yes. Be my wife and mother of my children."

"Yes, yes and yes! Yes a million times over."

He got up and put the ring on my finger.

I was truly happy as Zac spun me around and around. We collapsed in a laughing heap.

"You had me going for a while there. I'm never going to let you go."

He enveloped me in a warm embrace and softly kissed me. I knew then that I had made the right decision.
