The day I helped out at the fair with the police explorers was last Tuesday. July 25th. I know, it's been awhile. Sorry it took so long to get this out. I've been busy.
I was scheduled there from 11am to 10 pm, but I could leave early if I wanted to. I left at about 9:40 or so. I wanted to stay the whole time, but hey, close enough.
My dad and I were the first ones there at the Sheriff's booth. About 30 minutes early. A few minutes after we arrived someone else came but he didn't have a key so we (mostly him and my dad) talked for a bit.
Someone with a key soon arrived and we walked in. And as soon as I did....
THIS!
This what I saw!!
Yeah, I thought you guys might like to see that. I mentioned it to a couple of people, even a moto cop later. I was trying to make conversation incase someone was a huge fan of CHiPs. Both were like, "Oh, that, yeah." LolAfter a bit, my dad left for a movie and possibly Harbor Freight to pass the time.
Oh, and by the way, this is what the booth looked like.
So, then Undersheriff, a couple people from the Victim's Service Unit (a group of volunteers, who help comfort victims or family of victims in a tragedy), and I started blowing up balloons with a helium tank for kids. (It was kid's day.)
One of the guys asked me a couple times throughout the day, "You're not breathing in that helium. Are you?" I said, "No." He said, "Well, good. Doesn't sound like you are."
At first, I couldn't tie a balloon. I don't know what it was. The Undersheriff said, "Remember, tying a balloon is one of the key elements of policing."
We tied them to pencils first but then they just floated away. 👋😂 So, then we tied them to suckers (or for you people in Europe, small lollipops). Someone said, "Who wants pencils anyway? They want the candy."
So, I loved the kids. I loved their excitement over the police, although some were a little shy in taking balloons, candy, coloring books, and badge stickers.
So after awhile I got hungry. The guy from the Victims Services Unit told me about some tacos that have a discount for anyone involved with the Sheriff's office. Normally, fair food is super expensive, but I was really surprised. I only spent $5 that whole day for 3 tacos and a pop (aka soda). Yeah, I'm a saver. I was going to get a elephant ear or a corndog, but I never did.
But anyways, I'm getting ahead of myself. So after I ate, more deputies came. I was waiting someone to take me out on patrol, because the Srg. (in the Sheriff's office) said, they would. I kept seeing more leave except for a couple still in the little room next to us. One had to stay with the radio at all times. So I asked the explorer advisor sitting next to me and she said to ask one of the deputies if someone would available to. So, I did.
One of the deputies that was standing in the radio room... She told the deputy sitting there, "Well, why don't you take this young lady out on patrol?"
And he shook his head, not wanting to and said, "I'm trying to catch up on the news here." He was looking at his laptop.
She said, "Well, okay." and told me, "I'll take you out when my phone charges a little more."
But I think she got busy. Not to long after that, my dad came back with some popcorn and ice cold pop.
My dad told me later that after the movie, he went to the people selling the food. He told the guy that I was with the police explorers and he would like for him to fill up the pop again for me. He said, "I'll do better than that." He dumped out the remaining pop and filled up the cup with ice fresh pop! Cool!!
While sitting at the table in the Sheriff's booth, I looked through the pass through window to my left and I see my dad talking to a deputy and pointing at me. He pointed at me several times to make me wonder what they were talking about. Dads.... Lol
So, then that deputy took me out on patrol by foot. We talked about my future. Will I go to college? What after dispatch? And he wanted to make sure I knew I could to anything I wanted. Got me thinking.
So then we went back to sit down out of the sun and rest, talked a bit, then he had to leave for something.
Then after a bit I went on patrol with another deputy, who drove us around the fair a golf cart. We talked about random stuff. My YouTube, what it's like being an officer, etc.
Then an explorer arrived later in the day. We went searching for a missing little girl. I didn't hear how old she was until later. So, I was looking for what she was wearing and her hair color. Then, if we found her we could ask her if that's her name.
I was looking everywhere in the crowds of surrounding people we were passing, up in the rides, etc. I felt like I was on a mission. Sort of was in a way.
I saw one girl in line and was just pointing her put to my fellow explorer, when the first deputy I walked with approached us. He said that they had found her. She was 2 1/2 so the girl I saw was a little older. But thank God they found her.
After that the explorer and I continued to patrol. We stopped to watch some people arguing to make sure it didn't turn into a fight. If it had we would have got a deputy to come and handle it. The argument died down after a bit, so we continued to walk.
Then there was a boy who came up to us and said, "Are you security?"
The explorer I was with said, "Well, no not really. What's the problem?"
He said that his mom was looking for her stolen phone and tracked it down with the "Find My iPhone" app to the place she laid it down under a vendor's tent.
We found a nearby deputy and he listened to the situation, then showed the vendor the app. He was a little nervous, but we looked around for the phone. We couldn't find it.
The deputy took a report and gave the guy the number from the missing phone and a number to call if he found the phone.
After going back to the booth, one of the deputies said, "You are the guys I've been looking for! We need some more balloons." I thought there was going to be more action. 😂
As we were blowing up balloons I overheard the deputy that handled the stolen phone situation say that he knew that the guy had the phone, but couldn't prove it. And also that he'd been arrested before. He had a warrent out for his arrest for I think selling brass knuckles, or something along those lines.
Meanwhile, we were trying to tie the balloons. My fellow explorer told me when we first started that he couldn't tie balloons. My hands were sweaty, so I was working on it. Lol
Then my fellow explorer joined me, trying to balloons. You should have seen us, I bet it must have looked hilarious! The deputy that told us that more balloons needed to be tied said, "Oh, come on, you expect to solve murders and you can't even tie a balloon." 😂
Everyone else walked outside and stood around to chat, then of course we could tie the balloons. Lol
Nothing happened after that, even though the other explorer said that after it gets dark is when more of the action happens. Gang activity sometimes. They come in wearing all the same color. My dad stayed as long as he could and we left about 20 minutes before we closed down. So, I had a really fun time! 😁
