"Sir, I don't think I heard you right." I quickly stood up. My mind in total shock of what he said. "Did you just say I'll be up against YOU?" He looked at me with an uncaring expression.
"Yes. I did. Would you like to face me first?" I quickly shook my head. "Then please. Class." He snapped his fingers and a staircase appeared, leading down to the battle ground at the bottom.
~I must be on this guy's bad side or something for not coming orientation day...~ I sighed. "Sir, you said I'll be going first?"
"Yep." I groaned but he didn't even turn to look at me as we all walked down the staircase behind him. I saw Kane ahead of me. Three people between us. Then I turned and saw Ruby was right behind me glaring, as if trying to light me on fire right then and there. I quickly turned back around.
~Alright. Time for the big unveiling I guess.~ The dirt under our feet was like a thin layer of sand on concrete. But obviously it was all just strong earth for earth magic users.
"Alright. Xavier. You go to one end, Ruby, the other." As he spoke he walked over to a platform in the bleachers. "Students that aren't battling at the moment, please follow me." They followed, Kane stared me down with a grin as he did. They all sat in the chairs behind Mr. Kamata.
The area we started in were circles at each vertex of a diamond. Obviously for if battles consisted of more then two mages. But the large diamond put at least twenty feet between each start point. Giving each mage plenty of lead way. Ruby stepped into her circle, and I stepped into the one opposite of her.
A few moments passed and a magic barrier began to form, starting at the top of the walls of the guard walls that protected the bleachers. It slowly creeped upwards and then became whole as it sealed itself at the top. It suddenly went silent. Ruby stared dead at me. She was obviously ready for this. I was still unsure to how I would do.
"Alright. I will ring the bell. When you hear it, the match will begin. The match ends under three conditions. The opponent surrenders, runs out of mana, or is unable to battle any longer. No using items, no weapons unless it is part of your magic, and no killing. If you break any of these rules you forfeit the match and are disqualified from any more matches." Mr. Kamata looked at Ruby. "Do you understand?"
"Yes sir." His gaze turned to me.
     "Do you understand?" I nodded.
     "Yes sir."
"Then let the magic... BEGIN!" The bell rang, and I felt my whole world freeze around me for a moment.
     "Let it begin."
