It had been two days since that rainy night and the weather didn't seem to be getting better; in fact, it was actually getting worse. Though there hadn't been any more rain except for a little drizzle here and there, the sky was constantly dark and blanketed with thick grey clouds. I guessed it had something to do with the impending hurricane that was supposedly headed directly toward the island.

I was presently on lunch break at work. Instead of going out for lunch, however, I was at my desk having club sandwich and orange juice I had brought from home.

I was about halfway through the sandwich when Hilda popped in, wearing an expression that was somewhere between puzzled and nervous.

"Uh, Mrs. Saunders, there's someone here to see you," she said warily.

"Who is it?" I asked her.

"He said his name is Detective Chris Sterling."

Surprised, I let out an exasperated sigh.

What could he want?

"Send him in."

Hilda nodded and left the office. About a minute or so after, there was a light tap on the half-open door. Detective Sterling stood in the doorway, holding a folder in one hand. He was wearing blue jeans and a white shirt that was a bit tight and hugged his muscular torso. I guessed it was true what they said: men looked good in white.

I gestured for him to come in. When he took a seat on the opposite side of my desk, I pushed the half-eaten sandwich aside and looked at him expectantly.

"Sorry to interrupt your lunch," he began.

"Sure you are."

He smiled, then leaned a little closer to the desk. "Do you speak to everyone like that, or is it just me?"

"Like what?"

"Sarcastic. And rude."

I didn't think I was either sarcastic or rude to him but I decided not to deny it.

"It's just you."

"And why's that? What have I done to you?" He asked.

I couldn't help but laugh at that. "What have you done? Hmm, let's see. First you arrest me for murder, then you make me sleep at a police station, then you give me a speeding ticket?" I smiled. "Maybe I just don't like the shirt you're wearing."

"Really?" He looked down on himself. "I happen to like this shirt very much," he said faking a hurt expression.

I had to bite the inside of my lips to keep myself from laughing.

"Who would've thought you had a sense of humor." I said blandly.

"Seriously, though, you can't blame me for doing my job," he said matter-of-factly.

I didn't answer and we were quiet for a few very long seconds.

"Is there a reason you're here?" I asked, breaking the silence.

"Yes," he said, sitting up in his chair. He placed the folder on the desk and opened it, then pulled out about two sheets of paper stapled together and handed them to me.

"What is it," I asked without taking it.

"It's a confidentiality contract. The chief wants you to sign it. It just says that you will not speak to anyone about the Dominique Wilson case. It's a very important case and it can cause a whole lot of trouble if information gets to the wrong person "

I frowned. "I don't know anything about the Dominique Wilson case."

"Yes you do. You know about the evidence and where we're keeping the suspect. No one else can know that."

"Okay," I sighed, taking the papers.

I read each page carefully. It was basically just as he'd said. I picked up a pen that was lying on the table and scribbled my signature on a line at the bottom of the last page, then handed the papers back to him.

He took them and placed them back into the folder.

"Thank you," he said, rising from the chair. "Well, I don't want to take up any more of your time. Enjoy the rest of your day."

I nodded and he turned and headed for the door.

"Don't forget to pay off that speeding ticket," he said just before disappearing out the door.

I let out an angry grunt before rolling my eyes and getting up to discard the rest of my sandwich.

By the time I was driving home that evening, light droplets of rain were tapping lightly against my windshield. However, by the time I pulled into my driveway, the rain was long gone and the car was dry.

The first thing I did when I entered the house was turn on the TV to check on the weather. The weather lady wasn't on yet so I made my way to the kitchen to get some potato chips.

By the time I got back, the weather lady was speaking. I watched in fascination as she announced that hurricane Olivia was now at category three and was to hit the island approximately June 20, which was only about three week away.

She finished speaking and the sports news began. I switched off the TV and headed upstairs for a shower.

When I was about halfway up the stairs, there was a knock on my front door.

"Who is it?" I called as I headed for the door.

"Delivery for Anna Saunders."

I stood on tiptoes and looked through the peephole to see a short man standing there holding a box in his hands.

I opened the door and he handed me the box.

I remembered ordering a few things online but I was still a bit cautious.

"Where is this from?" I asked.

"Gigi's Florals. Someone made a request to have them sent to you."

"They're flowers?" I wasn't sure who would be sending me flowers but thought I had an idea of who it was.

The man nodded and I took the box. He then presented a clipboard and a pen for me to sign for them.

Before signing, I shifted the lid slightly and peered inside. I was surprisingly pleased to see what looked like a bunch of red roses lying in the box. I quickly signed for them and went inside, locking the door behind me.

I took a seat on the sofa and removed the lid completely, tossing it aside, then picked up a card that lay carelessly between some of the flowers and started reading.

I didn't appreciate you closing the door in my face. You don't want to make me angry!

Love always,
One and only.
