I narrowed my eyes and angled my head towards the ground to see who was following me. One man stepped out of the shadows. No not one, but two!
They were huge burly looking men. The type that meant business. They wore dark trench coats and one of them had a cigar in his mouth.
"Where did that street urchin go?!" growled one of the two burly men.
I sighed inwardly. Not even two hours here and I'm already getting in trouble?! I honestly have the worst luck.
"Don't worry John, once we find that little rascal we'll take her money," the other man said, laughing cruelly in his deep voice.
Not today mister!
With a battle cry I launched myself off the stair railings and landed on one of the men's shoulders, wrapping my legs around his neck in a choke hold.
He gasped for air and was frantically clawing at my legs. I pulled him to the ground and swung my left leg out to knock the air out of the other man. "Next time you wanna take someone's money, steal it from someone your own size!"
Both of them collapsed and were equally unconscious. I dusted my pants and sighed in relief. "Whew that was easy," I laughed as Marshie chirped his approval.
I had a feeling of another pair of eyes searing into my back. Ugh I'm probably just worked up and imagining things right now. I shrugged it off and was about to head out of the alleyway when I heard a crunch of a step.
I stopped, slowly turning around and scanning the area. "Who's there? Show yourself before you end up like these gentlemen!" I barked.
A man stepped out from behind a trash can with his hands raised in front of him in a surrendering gesture. "Um greetings please don't hurt me?" he asked.
Now that I had a better look of him. He actually looked around my age and was in fact not a man. He had dark blonde hair, blue eyes, and was wearing the Victorian London style coat, vest, and trousers.
Oh man he was hot.
That jawline and cheekbones were sharper than the dagger I hid in my boot! I mentally slapped myself. Get ahold of yourself! You're here on a mission, not check out hot London guys!
After I snapped out of my trance, I realized he was studying me too. Wait...oh yea I don't even think that African Americans were introduced in the 1700s! Shoot! What if slavery existed in this time of England? I was definitely screwed.
"You're not from around here are you? I can tell. I've never seen anyone like you, " the stranger frowned a little.
"Um who are you?" I asked carefully. For my sake, I hope he wasn't one of those burglars.
"Oh my apologies! My name is Edmund Caliber. How do you do?" he gave me a mock bow and tipped his invisible hat.
I felt myself involuntarily smiling. I wasn't sure if revealing my name was smart, but Edmund seemed relatively harmless.
"I'm Clarissa Jenkins and to answer your question, I'm not English," I introduced myself, smiling shyly. Why am I even nervous? I'm a secret agent for god's sake.
He repeated my name under his breath, testing how it sounded. I realized that my name was probably not that common around here. He smiled at me.
"You know it's not everyday that I come across a girl that can fight," Edmund said, his admiration evident in his voice. He was leaning lazily against the wall, studying me.
I felt my organs casually melting into the floor, but a groan coming from behind us reminded me that the burglars I knocked out were slowly waking up.
"Okay no time for words. Let's just run!!" I yelled as I grabbed Edmund's hand and practically yanked his arm as I dragged him out of the alleyway and into a nearby building.
