IT WAS A TAMPON!!!
Just kidding.
It actually was the strangest piece of metal ever. It was made out of bronze-looking gears and it had a code written on the side, 5562-39511-86. I knew better than to judge it for its looks, it was essential to the Agency. I read the sign in front of it, which said, "Mr. Richard Linsky's Famous Gear Part." Whoever this guy was, he probably was the creator. The men next to me were talking enthusiastically about the potential of the gear part. I slid off into the corner of the museum to avoid being seen by people.
I gritted my teeth when I saw Edmund still talking to that cute blonde girl and I knew that I'd never stand a chance with him. I wasn't even supposed to stand a chance with him at all. He was a pure distraction, nothing else. I hope....
I surveyed the museum, craning my neck to study the ceilings and walls. Hmm the ceiling was made of glass to let light in and there seemed to be no security of some sort. I knew that the museum doors were locked at night and the artifact's only security was a couple of locks. I also found out that was only one night watch man who checked the museum once at night to make sure everything was okay.
I smiled mischievously. I guess stealing the artifact would be easy after all! I checked my watch, 36 hours left to complete the mission. I knew I had to rob the museum tonight. I walked over to Edmund and stood next to him, "Edmund are you ready to go?" The girl who was talking to him stopped abruptly and glared at me. I felt more uncomfortable under her scrutiny. I was glad that my hood concealed most of my face. She Edmund gaped at me," You're already done? I didn't even get a chance to look around," he said sheepishly. I held back from rolling my eyes when the girl blushed and said,"Oh Mr.Caliber I would be delighted if you could accompany me around the museum."
She eyed me disdainfully and looked me up and down. I felt conscious about my African American heritage and the plain dress I wore. I could tell that she thought little of me and thought of herself on a higher level by that superior grin she wore. She turned to Edmund "So where are we going?" Edmund blushed and replied surprisingly, "Well Elizabeth would you like to visit my home? Ellie has been asking for you." My gut filled with anger, wait what? Why do I feel so jealous about this? I coughed, "Oh, uh." I just stood awkwardly for a second until the Elizabeth girl smugly answered,"Yes we've known each other for years! I remember playing with Ellie and her dolls!"
I suddenly felt disheartened and just out of it. I couldn't let my sudden saddness get in the way of my plan. My plan was to stay in the bathroom until the museum closed. So Elizabeth and Edmund could have their alone time anyway. I almost barfed, then and there at the thought of them.
"Well I wanted to explore the city a bit more anyway, find the library." I awkwardly put in. "Oh alright, I'll see you at home then. I hope you remember the way," Edmund looked at me a little worriedly. Elizabeth pretended to smile at me, but when Edmund turned away she glared at me, shooting daggers out of her eyes. She fluttered her lashes coyly and said," Oh dear it's quite hot outside. It must be a real burden to wear a hood don't you think?"
"Actually I think it's perfect weather, but a fine delicate lady like you would break at such warm temperatures. You poor thing!" I played along with her, feigning my innocence.
Her mouth fell open in surprise, but she recovered quickly and pursed her ruby red lips together in disgust. In my peripheral vision, I swore I saw Edmund crack a slight smile which he attempted to hide.
I turned and quickly rushed out of the musuem and to the side of the large building, where I could see the people exiting. I let out a breath of relief. If I didn't make it out there fast enough I'm pretty sure she would have killed me, if I wasn't a trained agent that is. Edmund and Elizabeth were exiting in the direction of his house. His expression looked thoughtful as Elizabeth held onto his arm and giggled at whatever conversation they were having.
I turned to face the museum and started making my way up the steps when I was faced with the most difficult decision of my life.
