I walked past the coffee shop. It had become the meeting place for Shimmer, Aura, Jesse and me. It was hard to believe that it had been a month since I first met Shimmer.
It had been 3 weeks, yet I still had a hard time believing that Aura and Jesse were a couple. But in a weird, messed up fantasy creature way, it made sense. A month and Aura still hadn't talked to me. Jesse was her translator. He told me there was a reason why she didn't speak. Yet he didn't tell me when I asked. It seemed like he was uncomfortable even saying that much, so I didn't pry. I mean, everyone has their secrets, right?
I had stopped meeting with them every day after the first week. We had lives that we needed to get back to, but we still had a meeting every few days. Shimmer filled me in on more information while I picked her brain with constant questions. But today I would ask a question that I had wanted to ask for a while.
I sat on my now-regular swivel stool by the high counter as I waited for Jesse and Aura. It was an unspoken rule that we wait for all the members of the group. It was weird for the pair of them to be late--not that one was ever seen without the other. They were that kind of couple: too clingy, yet somehow they survived as boyfriend and girlfriend. I looked at Shimmer who was sipping at what appeared to be Ginger Ale. Her shimmer hovered around the cup which she held in her hand. It had been hard to get used to at first, seeing these things that other people didn't. But eventually I kinda got used to it--key word kinda.
The door opened and Jesse and Aura walked in--well, Jesse walked and Aura sort of just floated. Jesse sat on the stool closest to the wall while Aura perched herself on the edge of the counter. I smiled at them and Jesse nodded to signify that the meeting could start. I bought a coffee because seeing Shimmer with her drink had made me realize how thirsty I was.
"So what's on the agenda today?" Jesse asked. Shimmer looked at me because I was the one who called these meetings.
"I know this is a big no-no but..." I trailed off.
"But?" Shimmer prodded.
"Where are you from?" I finished quickly. There was an assortment of expressions around me, ranging from shocked to frightened to accepting. Aura was the frightened one whereas Shimmer was accepting and Jesse was the owner of the last expression: shocked. After the second day I hadn't asked questions like that. But it had been bugging the ever-living crap out of me.
It was quiet for the longest time. So long that I thought they weren't going to answer. Then Shimmer spoke up.
"Guess." If I didn't know her better, I'd say that she was joking.
"Alright. Shimmer... how about... Peter Pan?" The faerie in question laughed and shook her head so I tried again, "Ummm.... I dunno. Something British." Shimmer laughed at that.
"Yes, something British." she agreed.
"Nymph?" I suggested. She shook her head.
"Faerie, yes, but wrong origin. That's too Greek." She looked at Jesse and I frowned, stumped.
"Fan fiction?"
"No."
"Anything that's popular here?"
"No."
