Mermaids and Mermen

West Palm Beach

I look in the mirror and see a teenage girl. She has bright red hair and green-blue eyes. She has a white tank top on with a gray sweater on top. It was big on her so it slid down her shoulders a little bit. The girl in the mirror was the one and only...aka me, Malia Heptner. I walk down stairs and grab my backpack. It's the middle of March, almost April. I get in my car and start driving. I go to Royal Palm Beach High School. My phone rings and I see the caller is my best friend Maddie.

     "Hey, Madds."

    "Hey, Malia. Oh by any chance did you do the history homework last night?"she asks.

    "Yeah..I'll give you the answers when I actually get to school.."

   "Thanks...your a life saver Malia."she says as I end the call. I pull into the school parking..and I see Maddie, out there waiting for me. Maddie has bright blue hair with green eyes. She has a sliver nose ring but....that doesn't bother me. We walk into school to find one of my other besties. Aiden Simmer, who is not only my best friend but my lab partner. He's got light brown hair with the top dyed green-blue. He's got gray eyes and he's black Panic! At The Disco t-shirt. Maddie sits behind me and class starts.

Lunch time....one of my favorite times of day. Lunch is my favorite because it's the only time I get to leave school. I usually go out for lunch since cafeteria food sucks. I start to drive off to McDonald's when Peyton opens the door.

    "Didn't think you were leaving without me.. Did you?"she says as she puts on her seat belt.

   "Hey, Peyton."I say smiling. Peyton has only been my friend since this year. Though we act like we've been friends from birth. Peyton has light long brown hair with the ends dyed pink. She has dark green eyes. We get to McDonald's and order our food and begin a conversation.

   "So there's supposed to be some killer waves today...want to go surfing?"she says as she grabs a fry.

     "Maybe.....I have to start packing though. I'm going camping tonight on Moonlight island."I say finishing my cheeseburger.

   "Your going to Moonlight! That's sooo much better than surfing...I wish I could come. I've got a math test that I need to study for. You bringing anyone?"she says mouth full of food.

    "Nope just me...I like it out there. It helps me think. Plus, I love exploring the island." I start the car up as we drive back to school.

  I know that you think I'm going to say my day at school was great and fun. Wrong! My day at school was terrible because I had to actually go to school and there's nothing worse than that.
  
     Anyways, I get home and grab my bag and start to pack for tonight. I grab a flashlight, food, water bottle, first aid, sleeping bag, binoculars, phone, sunglasses, lighter(for starting fire), and compass. I walk up stairs and see my mom. I live with my mom and aunt May, so I never have a dull day.

    "Hi, mom." My mom has red hair but not nearly as red as mine. She's got olive skin and blue eyes.

   "Hello, sweetheart. Going camping tonight?"she says.

   "Yep. I'm going to head out in a little bit. Have you seen aunt May?"I say. Aunt  May is usually home by now so I'm kinda of wondering where she is. The door opens downstairs.

    "That's probably her."I rush down the stairs to see aunt May. She's about 40 years old, seven years younger than my mom. She has straight brown hair with brown-hazel eyes.

      "Hello..Malia. Going to Moonlight again?"she says. She was the one who showed me Moonlight. She said it was where she had her first kiss.

    "Yeah...if you want you can come with me aunt May."I say. The last time I went with aunt May to Moonlight was when I was 14, 2 years ago.

    "Oh, I'm sorry sweetie. I have to go to work in the morning. I really wish I could go with you."she says and I can see she really wants to go. Aunt May is a lawyer and is really good. Which usually means she's really busy. I leave an hour later after getting some homework done. I kiss my mom goodbye as I walk out the door with my stuff. I walk down to the beach and see the kayak rental shack. I rent a red kayak and make my way to Moonlight.
   
   You may be wondering what the deal is with Moonlight. Well the island is not known by many so it's never crowded. There's three large mountains on the island. Your probably thinking if there's three mountains why does nobody really know about it? Well Moonlight is said that if you take anything from the island then you'll be cursed. That's really just to keep the tourists away though . It's called Moonlight island because you can see the moon and starts perfectly, no air pollution.

    I finally get there and set up camp. I lay out my sleeping bag and start to gather wood to make a fire. Once the fire is made I lay in my sleeping bag, staring up at the stars. Tomorrow's a full moon and should be a great day exploring. I gently drift off to sleep....
