After standing in the long line wrapped around the lobby of the theater and sitting for what seemed like an hour of previews, the opening credits of our movie finally pop up on the big projection screen in front of us. Giddy from anticipation for the movie that I've been dying to see, I reach across the arm rest and squeeze Theo's big, masculine hand. He squeezes back gently, then plops his arm around my shoulders, making me feel warm and secure.
Throughout the film, I sneak glances at Theo from the corner of my eye, only to catch him watching me instead of the movie.
"This part is getting intense, you might want to turn your attention to the screen," I whisper in his ear for the thousandth time. He just chuckles and faces forward once again. As soon as I look back myself, an alien jumps out of nowhere and attacks one of the main characters, scaring me half to death and seriously testing my bladder strength.
I'm the type of person who has to pee at the first sign of something scary coming my way, so I figure I should go to the bathroom now instead of in my seat the next time something lunges at me from the screen.
"I'll be right back. Bathroom break," I say quietly to Theo and crouch down as I make my way down the aisle and out of the theater, as to not disturb the rest of the movie-goers sitting in the plush red theater seats next to mine.
Once I've relieved myself, I come out of the stall and walk to the sink to wash my hands and fix my hair in the mirror underneath the fluorescent lights.
A cough from the other end of the bathroom makes me jump. It was eerily quiet, so I wasn't aware there was anyone else in here. Slowly glancing towards the end of the stalls, I catch a glimpse of a blonde coming out, and at first I don't recognize her. But then I mentally replace her cotton tee, jean shorts, and converse with a red latex dress and stripper heels.
Theresa, the girl from the party. The one that couldn't keep her hands off Theo.
I try to slip out of the bathroom unnoticed, but she stops me just short of the door, holding out a stick of an arm to block my path.
"I know you. Where do I know you from?" Her over the top squeaky voice makes me think she's feigning this ignorance. I absolutely remember her.
"Umm, we met at a sorority party a while ago. I, uh, was with Theo," I state uncomfortably and shift from one foot to the other.
"That's right! I assume you aren't still together, after all Theo is the hump-and-dump type, am I right?" She sneers, turning back to inspect her lipstick in the mirror.
"I am actually. We're here seeing a movie together right now as a matter of fact, so I'd better get back." My anger starting to get the best of me, I feel myself wanting her to feel jealous of me.
Pregnancy hormones are a bitch. What can I say?
"Oh well just be careful getting into a relationship with that man, he is not as perfect as he seems. Trust me, I would know."
I try not to take the bait she's so obviously trying to get me to bite at, but curiosity gets the best of me.
Curiosity killed the cat you know, my inner-self nags.
"What do you mean?" I ask, instantly regretting it when her lips twitch into an evil grin.
"I guess I have to tell you, since we're both girls, and girls gotta stick together in this fucked up world," she says too much like a high school cheerleader for my liking.
"So, it all started at the beginning of this year. That's when I met Theo at a party! We instantly hit it off, and long story short, I ended up jumping his bone and we got pregnant." She laughs nonchalantly before continuing, "I'll spare you the gory details, but basically once I told him about the baby he went ballistic and even tried to make me get rid of it! I wanted no part in murdering an innocent child, but sadly I ended up miscarrying around 3 weeks. You know what they say though, God has a plan for everyone." She finally finishes her speech and just shakes her head back and forth.
I'm completely in shock. My brain can't form a single rational thought, nonetheless a response. I shrug my purse further up my arm, and shove past Theresa.
"Hey, look on the bright side! At least you know the real him before he can knock you up too!" She shouts out at me as I run from the bathroom.
My heart starts beating erratically while I think of what to do. Is Theo really the type of guy that would force a girl to have an abortion? The thought makes my stomach flip.
I bolt outside and quickly flag down a cab. Jumping into the back seat, I slam the door shut and ramble out my address to the young hispanic driver before pulling my cellphone out of my purse.
CORA: started feeling sick, so I got a taxi to take me home. I'm fine, just wanted you to enjoy the rest of the movie. Call you when I'm feeling better
I send the text to Theo and silently pray that he doesn't try to come to my rescue like usual. My phone dings in my lap, startling me and making me juggle the phone as I try to open the message.
THEO: you sure? I can come take care of you
Shoot!
CORA: I'm good, I promise. Probably just something I ate. I'll call you tomorrow
THEO: k. Let me know if you need anything. Had a good time tonight.
I sigh in relief once he relents.
The cab driver drops me off in front of my house, and I hand him a wad of bills from my purse, my mind racing with so many thoughts that I don't bother counting it. I stumble into my house and face plant onto the couch.
What do I do?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wake up on the couch early the next morning in the same USD shirt and matching yoga pants I was wearing yesterday. My head aches and my stomach is still in knots, so I do the only thing I can think of. I dial Kimi's number and tell her to get here stat.
When the doorbell rings an hour later, I've showered and changed into a clean pair of denim cutoffs and a black peplum tee, as well as cut up a few pieces of fruit for Kimi and I to snack on.
I yank the door open, and the look in Kimi's eye tells me she knows something's wrong.
"Tell me everything," she says putting her hand on my back and leading me back inside.
Sitting cross legged on my couch, I pick at the fruit plate and contemplate where to begin.
"So..." she urges me to start talking.
"IMPREGNANTANDITSNOTTHEOSBUTTHEODOESNTKNOWANDIDONTKNOWHOWTOTELLHIM," I spit out too quickly to comprehend.
"One more time, in English please," she says with a slight smirk.
I take a deep breath, then speak. "I'm pregnant and it's not Theo's, but he doesn't know. And I don't know how to tell him," I state much clearer this time.
~~~
