Gilbert couldn't sleep at all the first night in the hospital. There were so many noises, like the beeping of the heard monitor and screaming every once in a while. It didn't feel like home. The blankets were too thin, the bed too hard, and the smell in the air too sterile. He wanted his own bed with the fluffy sheets and the fans set in all the perfect positions, and the sound of his pet canary chirping in the background.
He rolled over jumping slightly as his eyes landed on a person that really shouldn't be there.
"Who are you?" He asked. It was too late for nurses to be checking up on patients. Wasn't it?"
"You can...see me?" The figure lifted one skeptical eyebrow.
"Ja?? Why is that even a question? You're right in front of me."
"Yeah...but...people don't normally see me."
"Huh??"
"I'm dead..."
"You're a g-g-g-g-ghost?"
"That's what I'm saying scooby."
Gilbert chuckled softly. "So who are you, really? Were you night exploring?"
"No. I really am dead."
"Haha."
The stranger rolled his eyes and sighed softly. "My name is Matthew."
"I'm Gilbert." Gilbert sat up. "What room are you from?"
"Well...I was from this one originally..."
"But you moved?"
"On. Yeah."
"Hahahah. You haven't moved on, idiot. I've been trying to get you to move on for years!" Another figure emerged from the shadows, one with dark hair and dark clothing.
"Where did you come from,"
"Room 27."
"But the twenties are on the second floor?!"
"I know."
"Who are you?"
"Lovino. I'm a grim reaper..."
"Can you just come out and tell him that?" Matthew crossed his arms.
"He shouldn't be able to see me, so yeah I can."
"What are you guys talking about?" Gilbert felt dizzy from all the words that had been spoken. Grim reapers? What?
"I told you, I'm a ghost. And Lovino is a grim reaper who kind of lives in the hospital to harvest souls."
"So you were serious?!" Gilbert blinked. "You're actually a ghost?"
"Yeah..." Matthew nodded.
"You look pretty real..." Gilbert reached out his hand, intending to touch Matthew's chest, but it passed right through. "Holy shit!"
"Believe me now?"
"What the hell?? You weren't lying?? This isn't a prank?"
"Why would it be a prank? I don't prank people!" Matthew looked so offended. Maybe he was so pure and innocent that nobody would ever think he could do wrong. How precious.
"I can tell you're trouble from the look in your eyes." Gilbert winked.
Matthew huffed, puffing out his chest. "I'll have you know that I got perfect grades all through school and I never once did anything out of malicious intent."
"Never?"
"It's not like you really lived long enough to have fun." Lovino rolled his eyes. "You didn't even get your college years."
"I've had fun!" Matthew insisted. "And I'm still having it, so go take some other souls until I'm ready."
Lovino groaned and sank through the floor.
"Loser."
"I can still hear you, dipshit."
"Fuck off."
"You're feisty!" Gilbert gasped, chuckling softly.
"No I'm not!" Matthew's face turned red. "Shouldn't you be asleep or something?"
"Probably. But I don't want to if you're gonna watch."
"I wasn't...I'm not...I..." The blond held his hands up defensively. "I'm leaving."
"Have fun. I'll see you later."
"You're so weird." Matthew glided out of the room, legs not even moving. He passed through the wall, onto who knows where.
This certainly was a strange dream.
