Matthew thought Gilbert seemed off when he came back from observing Alfred's behaviour. He seemed more than off. He seemed like he had been shattered.
Matthew noticed it right away. He had floated into the room, offering a cheerful "hello", only to have it returned by a soft, uninterested grunt.
"So...what's wrong?" He might as well get to the point.
"Nothing."
Oh! He did not pull that trick on Matthew!
"Tell me. Please!"
"Why?"
"We're friends, aren't we?"
"You're dead."
"Nice. Thank you. Fucking dipshit."
"What? What did I say?"
"Just because I'm dead doesn't mean you can't be my friend!"
"It's kind of hard to hang out with you, honestly. It's not like there's much we can do."
"We can talk, and I help you cheat at video games." Matthew insisted. This guy really had a stick up his ads today, didn't he?
"It's not the same. I can't drink with you and you won't be fun at parties if nobody can see you. You don't have a phone or anything so I can't just contact you when you're not there and-"
"Fine. I get it." Matthew huffed, crossing his arms. "If you don't want me around, just be straight with me." He started to hover away.
Gilbert sat up as much as he could. "No! Wait!"
The ghost decided not to give the Prussian the satisfaction. He slipped through the walls and made his way down the crowded hall. He wanted to go back to Alfred, but his brother was already off for the day and Matthew couldn't leave this hospital. Instead, he decided to spy on another patient, one that couldn't see him. An obedient one who didn't talk back.
He settled on watching an old man sleeping while his wife say by his side. Matthew felt a pang as he realized once again that he would never have something like that. He would never grow that old, never meet anybody who would care for him that way. He was going to be alone forever.
Three years and he still couldn't believe that.
"It's been a while since you came to the terminal wing." A voice said behind him. He turned around to see a dull looking man, about three years older than Matthew would have been now, eyes a light violet and hair held back by a cross pin.
"Hey, Lukas." Matthew greeted. Lukas was another ghost that wandered around here. He had been here for about two years and also hadn't moved on, but only because he was waiting for his boyfriend, Matthias, who was in a coma. The two had been in the same car accident, but Lukas had only made it to the emergency room before the doctors gave up. Now, he just hung around the terminal ward, waiting for Matthias to either wake up or until his family decided to unplug his life support.
"I've been busy." Matthew sighed.
"What can a ghost be so busy with?"
"You're busy."
"Your boyfriend isn't in a coma. You don't even have a boyfriend."
"Ouch. Thanks for reminding me. But it's hard to get some when you have an asthma attack when you do anything more straining than kissing."
"Have you ever kissed anybody?"
"Yeah! Pssssh. Shutup."
"Virgin."
"Aaaah!" Matthew screamed. "I was nineteen and always in the hospital. I didn't have time for dating."
"You could have dated a cute nurse like a normal person."
"What kind of normal people do you know? I really want to know, Lukas."
"People who are terminally ill and flirt with nurses because they know they can't get any action outside a hospital."
"Okay, but I wasn't terminal. I was supposed to live a long life as long as nurses don't forget to do the squirty thing with the needles."
"That doesn't mean you couldn't have gotten a pity date with a nurse."
"I'm more of a doctor type. Or maybe a music loving cafe owner with a similar name to mine..."
"That's oddly specific."
"We would smoke oregano together in my basement and listen to Tegan and Sara while we hold hands and dream aboot all the puns we could make."
"Why oregano?"
"The neighbour's son is a bad dealer, okay."
"You've been alone too long. Go find something to occupy your time."
"I think I'll go bother Gilbert in the trauma ward a little bit more."
"Have fun with that."
"Bye."( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The dream daddy references were for you babe. I know Mat is your favourite but don't fall in love with him more than me okay?
