Gilbert woke up to an eerie cold coming from his front side. He opened his eyes to see a familiar pair of violet ones staring back at him.
"We're you watching me sleep again?" He asked. He felt better now that he had cried a little and he was glad that Mattthew had broken his promise and come back sooner.
"I miss it."
"Miss what?"
"Sleeping." Matthew sniffled. "I miss sleeping and feeling things and eating and...and I just miss being alive." He started to cry. Gilbert reached out a hand, wanting to comfort the weeping spirit, but his hand went through like always.
"I haven't been touched in three years and the last person who did it killed me."
"I wish I could touch you. I wish I could reach out and pull you into the biggest hug possible."
"I don't want to live like this anymore."
"What happens when you move on?"
"I don't know. Probably more of this bullshit in a different place."
"Is that why you haven't done it?"
"No. I told you. Alfred."
"But this is another reason. Isn't it?"
Matthew swallowed. "I don't want to do it alone."
Gilbert offered a gentle smile. "I'll keep you company until then. Okay?"
"But what aboot after you're healthy again?"
"Hmm..." Gilbert pondered this. "Maybe I'll get a job here."
"Yeah?"
"Ja. I'll work...in the gift shop with Alfred. And if there's any jokes or fun facts you want to tell him, I'll do it for you."
"Good! Because he doesn't know that seventy five percent of crystal meth in Australia has Canadian origins."
"Holy shit."
"AAAAAAND that hockey isn't our national sport."
"You're kidding me?"
"No. I'm not. It's lacrosse. Hockey is our national pastime, though."
"You're fucking with me. There's no way that's true."
"Why would I fuck with you? You're my best friend."
Gilbert's face burned hot through the chilling cold. "Really?"
"Yeah. Including the ones I had when I was alive."
"Wow. I'm flattered."
"Don't be. I only had, like, two friends when I was alive."
"Loser."
"Hey! I would have been popular if I wasn't in the hospital all the time."
"Hey, what school did you go to?"
"I was homeschooled. It was easier that way."
"So you could continue while you were in the hospital?"
"Yeah."
"We might have gone to the same school if you weren't sick."
"Maybe." Matthew smiled softly. "Do you think we would have been friends?"
"Ja! Obviously! You're awesome." Gilbert insisted. "I probably would have put the moves on you. You're cute as shit."
"Shit is not cute, Gilbert."
"The shit 💩 emoji is cute."
"Valid point."
"So...if I put the moves on you in high school...would you have accepted them?"
Matthew blushed slightly. "Probably."
"Even if we went to the junkyard to throw cans at seagulls after a delicious dinner at a local fast food place?"
"If the local fast food place is Tim Hortons then yes."
"Even if I tried to get you to drink booze with me?"
"Sweetie, you need to try?"
"I think...if you were alive...I would have fallen for you."
"I think if I was alive I would have fallen right back..."And I think if I wasn't dead inside you wouldn't be able to escape from how much I love you babe <3.
