"So...heroin, huh?" Matthew asked.
"It was a dumb party. I regret doing it."
"But you wouldn't have met me!"
"Don't get pouty. I'm sure I would have ended up here in the end anyway."
"So you're really as stupid as your brother says?!"
"Hey now! Stop that!"
"I'm sorry." Matthew snorted. "It's just so fun to tease you."
"Hey, Matt?"
"Yeah?"
"What was your family like?"
"It was just my parents and my brother, really." Matthew shrugged.
"Are you younger or older than him?"
"Younger."
"Where is he now?"
Matthew lowered his eyes, fidgeting with his hands in his lap. Gilbert didn't think he would answer. But then...
"He's here."
"In the hospital?"
"Yeah."
"Did he hurt himself?"
"No. He just works in the gift shop." Matthew swallowed. "You remind me of how he was."
"Was?"
"He settled down after I died. We were super close and...it just hurt to not have me around. He wanted to be a football player, but then he fucked up his ankle...distracted during a game...probably by grief. Anyway, he works in the gift shop now."
"Why here?"
"To stay close to me, I guess. I was pretty sick growing up so We played here more than at home."
"What were you sick with?"
"I had a weak immune system since birth. The first two months of my life was spent in an incubator and I've been in and out of this place ever since."
"Not anymore."
"No. Now I'm finally settled, even if I am dead."
Gilbert smiled softly. "Is that why you haven't moved on yet?"
"Nah. I haven't moved on because I'm making sure Al is okay."
"For three years?"
"Alfred just didn't take my death well."
"If you were sick, wouldn't he have seen it coming?"
Matthew shook his head. "I was going in for a needle. It wasn't anything risky, but there was air in the needle. The doctor forgot to do that squirty thing that they do."
"That's why they do that "
"You didn't know?"
"I'm afraid of needles."
"Chicken."
"Hey now!"
"I have every right to be scared of needles. They killed you, didn't they?"
"They don't normally do that. I've had plenty of needles, but only got killed by one."
"Do you think I could visit your brother?"
"Huh?"
"I'm allowed to leave my bed, probably. I can walk down there and even send a message for you."
"No! You can't let him know I'm here! I don't want to think about what that would do to him!" Matthew waved his hands out in front of him.
"It doesn't have to be something that would say you're alive. We're there any jokes or fun facts you never got to tell him?"
"I don't know. I'll tell you when we get there."
"Good. Let me just..." Gilbert tried to get himself into a sitting position, but his head started to feel like it was pulling a Beetlejuice and whirling on his neck. His vision started to go black.
"Bad news, Matt-ster," Gilbert sighed, "looks like I won't be standing for a long time."Did I mention that somebody finally did timmies and it was my favourite one???
