Song: I Walk the Line by Johnny Cash
1959
Gordie LaChanceIt was raining. Pouring, actually, yet I still left my house to go see her. She doesn't even know me, and I'd do anything for her. As I left my father pushed an umbrella my way, not even looking in my direction.
I huffed, the umbrella in my right hand as I stepped in puddles of rainwater.
"It's okay, Gordie, soon you'll see her, and it'll all be worth it," I said to myself.
I sped up as I neared the shop, and I peeked into the window.
My stomach dropped to my toes.
She wasn't there.
I checked my watch.
She should've been in the shop by now. Did her mom not let her out while it was raining? Was she in trouble?
I sighed, and looked up at the sky. It was still pouring rain.
I walked inside of the nearly empty ice cream shop, and sat in her usual spot.
"You're a little late," The man said as he turned around. He looked surprised to see me.
"Oh sorry, I thought you were someone else," The man laughed.
"Can I get you something?" He asked.
I gave him a small smile, "Strawberry milkshake, please,"
"Do you know the girl that usually comes in here?" I wish.
"Um, no, sir," I said, as I read the name tag on his shirt. Mario.
"Well, she usually comes in here, sits in the same spot you're in right now, and orders a strawberry milkshake," He said while making my drink.
"Quite a coincidence, sir," I spoke. He looked at me, and nodded slowly.
"Indeed, son," He said as he turned around and handed me my strawberry milkshake.
"That'll be thirty cents," He said, and I handed him a quarter and a nickel. I sipped happily on my drink and watched the rain fall, until I heard the words.
"Aren't you Denny LaChance's brother?"
I looked up at the man, "Yes," I said, and swallowed thickly.
"My condolences. He was quite the football star,"
