I Dreamed a Dream

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving

A drink, three
A stranger and business card
An offer
A sniper, a tiger and a magpie
Jim Moriarty

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted

Wine and steak,
Victims, Jobs, the line blurred
The line was forgetten
Twenty, thirty, fifty,
Hundreds
Moriarty

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
As they turn your dreams to shame

Nightmares
Blood and gunshots and tigers
Pills
Didn't work
Alcohol
Didn't work
A comforting voice; a warmth
Jim

He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came

Laughter and smoke,
Morality forgotten
Kisses shared over corpses
Flirting and bloodshed
A lover like a dream
A lover vanished on a rooftop
Kitten

And I still dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together

Nightmares
Hallucinations
Pills
Drinking
More pills
Talking to mirror, an empty chair
A ghost of a dream
James

But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather!

A graveyard, a grave
Flowers
Magpies sang
Unmarked, simply a name
Jim Moriarty

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now, from what it seemed

Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
