Phana walked out of the house in a state he seldom found himself in.  Frustrated and shocked by Wayo's refusal of him and his proposal,  he was beside himself.  As he made his way back to his Aunts,  he was reliving the words Yo had just said to him.

"Nong'Wayo believes me to be evil and cruel."  These words echoed in Pha's mind.  He held his hand to his heart,  even this did not stop the sharp ache that seemed to seize the thumping organ.

Pha never slept a wink.  He spent the night rehearsing the words he would have for Yo when next he saw him.  He jotted down all the points he wanted to make in his own defence.  He talked to himself and tested tones of voice.  Picturing Wayo's face helped in his practice.

He also spent a good deal of the night imagining the boy's bare chest again.  He'd seen it that day when he was out riding,  The boy's soft pink nipples,  the beauty of his lips and the brilliance of his skin haunted Pha's mind.   The night was spent sweating and,  he made efforts to brush the sullied thoughts of the young man's body away.  These thoughts were guilty of suspending his slumber.

In the morning he found himself running through the groves and paths of his Aunts gardens.  He tried not to get sweaty and appear dishevelled but,  he was feeling stressed that he was unable to find Wayo.

He knew that much of the boy,  Yo had walked every morning for the eight weeks he'd been there.

"Why can't I find him?"

Phana had scouted the unknowing Wayo out,  every day he'd been there.  Klahan would see him slip out of the house every morning,  Pha would stand at the top of the hill.  Klahan could see from his own room.  He watched Pha take in a direction with decisive resolve.  Klahan was sure his panning of the horizon had found something in Pha's interest.

When at last his stomach growled,  he knew that he was running out of time.  If he didn't find Wayo soon,  he would have to spend another sleepless night.  In Pha's panic, the idea of another night,  barraged with visions of Yo's sex, was tantamount to torture.

He was about to give up, and, found himself observing a small stream.  The water gurgled by at his feet as he lost his perfect posture and dropped his head in defeat.

Wayo was doing the same thing,  torturing himself with the things Phana had said to him the day before.  "He loves me?"

He'd found a fallen tree that was used as a crossing for a stream that ran through the reaches of Ms Taksin's garden. Wayo was straddling it and watching the tall reeds,  they stood perfectly still,  a result of the breezeless morning.
