The car slowed to a stop at the red traffic light. I heard the blinker start clicking, signaling we were making a left turn. My head was leaned against the window as I looked out at my old neighborhood. The light turned green and my aunt whipped around the street and onto S Homan Ave. We would be home soon and I would see my father, a man I haven't seen in four years because he made a mistake.
We pulled into the driveway and I was already opening my door before the car was in park. I grabbed my bags and ran up to the front door. I pushed the door open, calling for my father.
I heard heavy footsteps as he ran downstairs to greet me.
"Hi darling, I missed you"
"I missed you too"
"Okay so I'm going to go, do you have all your stuff from the car?" My aunt asked, cutting our reunion short.
"Yes I have everything. Bye" I said, hinting that I wanted her to leave. She wasn't the nicest aunt and living with her for four years wasn't the nicest either. I guess living with my father was better, he was never one to breathe down my neck, he was always out with 'his boys.'
"Thanks again Emily" My father said to her and she slammed the door behind her.
"Do you want to get settled in? I'm going to go to the store" My father said putting his boots on.
"Yeah I'll stay here. Um do all the same neighbors live here?"
"I know you only care about the Gallaghers and yes they still live here" he said rolling his eyes.
"I'll see you later" he said pulling the door shut behind him. I probably wouldn't see him until tomorrow. I know he's going to hit up The Alibi.
I grabbed my bag and ran up the stairs to my old room. My windows faced the street and my walls were covered in posters. Just the way I left it. I began putting my clothes and other stuff away when I saw a boy walking down the street.
I looked closer and realized it was Carl, but he had cornrows in his hair. I pushed open my window and shouted out to him before he was too far.
"Carl!" I shouted down at him. He stopped and looked around the street before his eyes landed on me. It took him a second to realize who I was.
"Blair Madison? What are you doing here?!" He yelled back at me.
"I'm back!" I said smiling proudly.
"Come down here, I'm on my way home!"
With that I stumbled out of my room and down the stairs. I pushed the door open and shut it behind me before running across the street to him.
Carl engulfed me in a hug and kept his arm around my shoulders as we walked down the street. I was amazed to see how much he had grown. He was finally tall than me too.
"Carl I think I like your new hair" I said touching his cornrows. "When did you get this done?"
"In juvie, that's where I've been for the past year"
"What? Why? What else did I miss?" I shouted completely confused by the information he just told me.
"Just a little drug misunderstanding, I just got out today. You've missed a lot, would've been great to have you around before juvie" he said laughing.
"Wow I wish I was hear for that drama, life in the Illinois country sucks ass. I wanted to die"
He just laughed as we turned and walked through their gate and up the steps. He opened the door and I felt nostalgic. I basically grew up in their house, with my dad being single and having a full time job.
I think Carl felt the same. He was looking around with wonder on his face.
"Debbie? Did you get my text?" We heard a voice say from the kitchen.
"Nah, it's me, I brought a friend" Carl shouted.
