Carl acted like a little boy on Christmas when I told him the news about Dominique. He couldn't be more thrilled. And I couldn't be more unhappy.
"Okay okay calm down" I finally said.
We were hanging out at my house. Pat wasn't home. He was out with Frank, no surprise there.
"This is great. You're the real Angel" he said hugging me.
"Stop get off" I said pushing him off. He just laughed. Nick was here too, but he never contributes to the conversations.
"Nick, let's get you a bike, my treat" Carl said ushering us out the front door.
Carl bought two bikes, one for Nick, and one for Dominique. I already had a bike, but I doubt Carl would buy me one since I wasn't the girl he was after.
~~~
It didn't take long for one of the bikes to be stolen, unfortunately it was Nick's, and he didn't take it well. A week passed and I felt like my life was back to normal. I was back in the groove of life on the South Side. Carl, Nick, and I had become like the Three Musketeers, we were always together. My father actually enjoyed the idea because he saw it as me having two bodyguards to protect me, which was true. Whenever creepy boys hit on me on the streets Nick would scare them away with one look. Carl was all talk, but Nick would actually beat someone up to save one of us.
Our reign over the South Side was coming to end so it seems. The Gallagher house was up for auction, and Fiona's ghosted husband was the only one who could save it. No one could stay at the house, everyone scattered. Carl and Nick were in a hotel, Fiona and Liam at Sean's, Debbie staying with another family, and Ian staying with his current boyfriend, Caleb.
I don't know what I'll do if the Gallaghers move away. It was bad enough leaving them for four years, but a permanent move will seriously ruin my life. Carl is my best friend, and the rest of the Gallaghers are like family, I can't imagine leaving them.
Pat used to drop me off at their house before he went drinking with Frank, Fiona practically raised me. She didn't turn me away, she accepted another child to take care of. I've never been able to repay her, until now. I'm going to give her all the money I've saved up for college. I need to save her house.
Carl shook me out of my thoughts. We were car shopping for Nick and I guess I spaced out because he was waving his hands in front of my face.
"Jeez I thought you fell asleep for a second" he said.
"What do you think of this one?" Carl asked Nick. It was a beaten up old cop car, stripped of the sirens and stickers.
"I don't want a car" Nick replied.
"C'mon Nicky, you need an upgrade. Let the bike thing go" I said finally coming out of my thoughts to help them shop.
"It's not about the bike, B. It's about more than that- it's about respect" he said looking down at me.
"We'll take it" Carl told the salesman and grabbed the keys. He handed the keys over to Nick who got in the driver's seat.
I got into the back while Carl sat shotgun. The car jerked forward then abruptly stopped.
"I haven't driven since I was eight" Nick said after complaints from me and Carl.
Nick took a second try at driving and sped away from the dealership and down the road.
I screamed and it eventually turned into a laugh at Nick's bad driving. I opened the window and stuck my head out.
"Here we come Chicago!!" I yelled, caught up in the moment.
"You're crazy girl" Carl said laughing at me.
I closed the window and sat back down, "I don't care if I'm crazy, I'm having fun" I stated.
