*Knock knock knock*
"Come in." Adym said. He was doing much better. He laid in the bed in a blue hospital gown, white socks, and his CK's. His hair was messy, but presentable, and had a bandage on his eye.
"Hey Adym. It's Jeanette(name might have changed.)." she said as she closed the door.
Adym's room was right next to Jacob's.
"Hey Jeanette. How are you?"
"I'm fine. I'll be better soon."
"Me too." Adym said cheerfully.
"I came to see how you were." Jeanette said taking a seat next to him.
"I'm fine. The doctors just came to tell me about my eye surgery. It went pretty well. I just need to relax the muscles, so they're coming soon to do an examination and let me sleep."
"That's good. Are you getting out soon?"
"Yeah. A couple hours after my nap and a checkup actually. So now.... I'm just chillin, and in a while imma dip."
"Good to hear." Jeanette began mumbling to herself how she'd switch going from Jacob's room to Adym's room.
Ironically, Jacob's treatment and Adym's nap were in the same hour-ish.
"Did you say Jacob?" Adym said turning his gaze from the window.
"And I came to talk to you about him also." Jeanette said. Her voice was a combination of stern, sad, and pessimistic.
Adym shot up -a little too fast; he grabbed his head- and turned to sit in Jeanette's direction. "What happened?"
Jeanette continued on downtrodden.
"You know Jacob's history right?"
"No. History of what?"
"Of life."
"No. Please tell me."
"I can give you a brief picture of up until he was 17 -when I adopted him-, then more detailed flashbacks of me taking care of him. To now."
"Sure." Adym sat in an attentive position -criss cross applesauce facing Jeanette.
"As you know, Jacob was born in 1992."
"Yeah."
"He had a good mother, but something came up that changed the whole situation."
"What?"
"Jacob had a brother. His name was Max. (name may have changed) It all happened when Jacob was six, and Max a year younger than him. Anyway, the two were playing, they were called for lunch, and so on. Jacob didn't feel well, so he decided to lay down. His brother kept playing, but -from what I was told- wanted Jacob to play a game with him."
"Wait, he didn't cry or anything?"
"Nope. Jacob's strong inside and out. Always has been, and needs to be."
"Wow. Props."
"So. Max tried to get his brother out of bed. Max threw so many things at his brother as did Jacob. But things took a turn for the worst when Jacob threw an alarm clock at his brother."
Adym gasped.
"One of the legs penetrated Max's head."
Adym's eyes grew wide.
His eyes were numb so he didn't feel pain or anything.
"So that's how he became an orphan. Mother threw him out. Crazy."
"That's so messed up. I wonder what happened to her. I ain't gon' lie, I hope karma came around and beat her ass."
"I can't blame you. But that's what eventually leads to how he's doing now. So Jacob was in and out of the orphanage. During this time he started getting sad most of the time. Adopters that turned him back in would frequently have reports of him looking at himself in the mirror and crying. He obviously had an issue, but no one really cared enough to ask someone about it. He was going to school, and made some friends. Including you."
"Yup. Dass me." Adym said with a smile.
"But all that changed when he came out. No one really liked him anymore. No one in the school cared about his well being as much. But it's fortunate I can look at the one face that gave a fuck." Jeanette grew slightly irritated. "So. Thank you."
"Anything for.... family."
A pause filled the room for a few seconds. Then the phone rang. Adym picked it up.
"Who is it?" "Oh, wassup?", "I'm fine. I gotta talk to you later." , "Bye."
"That was just Sawyer."
Jeanette raised an eyebrow.
"My brother."
"Oh. I remember him now." "Like I was saying. You were the only one who really cared. Jacob was still in the orphanage, but had been moved to the boy's blue collar group. All boys. Then he'd been adopted at fifteen. He made a friend. But this one unfortunately wasn't all that good."
Adym seemed to grow angry. "Why? What did he do to Jacob?!"
"Calm down. Calm down. He cared about Jacob, he just. Was problematic and habit forming."
"What do you mean?"
"That's later in the story. His name was Matty. Matty Barrett. I don't know much about him, but. He started Jacob's habit. Along with his depression. But 2 years later, Jacob was back in the orphanage. He came out to his adopting father, Mr. Sartorius. But that's why he wasn't put out. His adopting father had a stroke. He started to need more care than Jacob was able to offer, and depression about his father's condition got to him. So Mr. Sartorius's wife, sent him back. She was a harsh lady, but not nearly as bad as his biological."
"Is his father still alive?" Adym asked with surprising hope.
"His biological was never in the picture, or in mind. But the most notable adopter, Mr. Sartorius died of another stroke not long ago. Jacob took it all personally, and went to his pills. That was the first time he'd been hospitalized for such an issue." Jeanette let a tear fall down her face, Adym took his sheet, and wiped it for her. "Then I adopted him."
