I step inside the room and my hand immediately flies up to cover my mouth as a gasp escapes my lips. I see the almost lifeless body laying on top of the mattress that looks like it could be sold at a garage sale for 7 dollars. I thought hospital beds were supposed to be comfortable for the people who were dying? He was sitting there in a cheap looking baby blue hospital gown, stained with specks of blood. There were wires coming in and out of him. Parts of his arms were stitched up with dark blue stitches, weaving through his skin. You could hear the heart monitor in the background, beeping ever so slowly, like it can just stop at any moment. There was a rough looking blanket draped over his legs, I was glad I couldn't see what was under there or I would most likely pass out. I looked at his face. A blue and purple bruise covered his eye like a blanket. His mouth was slightly agape and a gash was placed on the far right side of his pink lips. His hair was going in all different directions. But there was something I didn't miss. The way he looked so much like me. Underneath all of the scratches, cuts and bruises, you could see the similar features. The way his nose had the same curve as mine. The way his lips were full and plump. The way his cheekbones were high and defined. His hair was a dark brown but I think he got that from his father. Even though I couldn't see it, but I somehow knew his eyes were the same color as mine too.
He was my brother.
There was no doubt about that.
I could see his eyes flutter open slowly, him wincing because of his black eye. I knew it. His eyes were the color too. A beautiful blue. The ocean was placed into his eyes. His eyes crinkled as he smiled slightly, looking straight at me. I brought my hand back down to my side and started walking up to him.
"I have a brother," I mumbled slightly. He nodded, a bit confused.
"You didn't know?" He asked in a whisper, his throat dry. I handed him the plastic cup of water that was placed on the tray beside him. He took it very slowly and took a sip mumbling a thanks. I shook my head.
"I live with my mom. Or well I don't even know if she's my mom. But all I know is that my dad died when I was four." I sighed, taking his hand in mine. Surprisingly there were no cuts or anything on his left hand. He gripped my hand like I would just vanish, and I did the same to him.
"He can't be your real father. Our real father is alive, and I live with him. Here." His voice still dry but it's a little better.
"Wait, this can't be a coincidence. Mom just moved here, where you guys live. How is it the exact location?" I ask, knowing something is wrong here.
"I really don't know. We moved here a few years ago. By the way, my name is Ethan. I'm 23. I know who you and your mom are, our parents divorced when you were six months old. I was six. I begged and begged to stay with you because I always wanted a little sister to take care of after I saw Toy Story for the first time and Andy had his little sister." He chuckled softly thinking back at the memory.
"That was all taken from me when dad grabbed my wrist and pushed me into the car. He told me that I should never see your mother again. To this day I have no idea what happened, but I am so glad I can see you. I will never let anything happen to you now that I know I can be the protective older brother I always wanted to be. Speaking of protective, who's the guy standing behind you?" He asked, looking over to Justin who was looking at the ground. His head snapped up at the mention of his name. I laughed softly.
"That's Justin. He was my first real friend when we moved here a few days ago. He gave me a ride here." I explained. Ethan nodded and sighed.
"I wish someone loved me like that." He groaned. My eyes widened.
"L-love?" I stutter, shocked. Of course I had this crush on him since. I mean look at him! He's a walking god! And he's so sweet and funny. And ugh, stop it Belle, you've only known him for a few days. I looked back at Justin and he had the red blush across his cheeks, mirroring mine.
"Yeah, have you seen the way you two look at each other? He has been standing there staring at you with so much love and awe. I have never seen someone look at someone that way. And you started looking at him when I mentioned him like you were the only two people in the world. You might not believe me now, but I know it when I see it." He explained shrugging. He definitely knows something I don't. But I don't say no when he says that, I just look at the floor, my face as red as a tomato. I groan.
"Whatever." I mumble, still staring at the ground.
"Ha! You didn't deny it." He says matter of factly.
The nurse then walks in, saving me from more embarrassment. She smiles at us and looks back at Ethan. She then hands Ethan a pill and he takes it, using the water to help it go down. We just started catching up and telling each other about our lives. Justin even joined in our conversation. I told him about our old house, my "step" father that died, what my mother did to me a few days ago, everything. That's how we stayed for the rest of the night until we had to go home because visitation hours were over by 10:30.
