The First Chapter

I sit at my desk again and survey this inconspicuous book. It is not the first time I hold it in my hands. After my dear friend Istari's wedding, I got a glimpse into it. I have to smile that Ishtari became true to her name: The goddess of war, beauty and fertility allowed me my first glimpse into this usually well hidden volume before she disappeared into thin air during their honeymoon. I noticed a change in her afterwards, a glowing in her appearance, a grace in her attitude and the secret smiles she sent her husband's way. And she hinted, that the book brought her delights she never considered possible before.

But my glimpse was too short and the first pages seemed just a boring list of authors who wrote about themes I didn't recognize. I didn't have the courage to ask my guru and forgot to pursue the matter any further. A mistake I regret deeply today, but as a studious wallflower the male-female interactions seemed not of such importance then.

Now, the first chapter seems to be exactly what I remembered: A meticulous listing of authors. But as I look closer I understand that it is a table of contents and a introduction of general topics. I start with a fresh sheet and write my first draft. But already the second chapters title is puzzle to me and I search frantically in my notes and quotes for a reference.

„You have some questions it seems?"

I squeak as he's spoken so close to my ear that I feel the wisper of his breath caressing my cheek. I have not heard him enter the library. The duke elegantly takes a seat vis-a-vis from me on the settee as a corner of his lips lifts. Wretched man to startle me so! He is unsettling and I am not used to be unsettled. And I certainly do not like to acknowledge to him that I am at my wits' end.

„Yes, sir" I answer exasperatedly, „I can't find the meaning of Samprayogika. I didn't came across this word before and as it is the title of the second chapter, it seems quite important."

„Yes, it is" he answers with a knowing smile. „It happens that the indian nobleman explained its meaning to me. It means: Everything related to congress."
