Mason's POV
I got home and was glowing, my mom picked up on it immediately.
"Why are you so happy?" She asked curiously. My sister was sitting at the kitchen island on her phone eating cereal.
"Well, the two new kids were in today." I told her nonchalantly. Her brows knit together in confusion as to why that would plaster a smile on my face.
"What are their names?" She asked. My father walked in and answered for me.
"Jack and Lucas." His gruff voice carried throughout the room and he walked over to my mother and kissed her forehead.
"Oh, well are they nice kids?" she asked me.
"Ya," I started, grabbing some food from the fridge before continuing. "One is my mate." I told them. I heard my sister's spoon fall in her bowl, looking away from the bright screen in front of her and I felt their eyes on me. I turned around and smiled at them. My mother's face split into a huge smile and she engulfed me in a hug.
"Oh my baby boy is all grown up!" she cooed.
"Congrats, bro." Kaitlynn patted my back and smiled up at me from her seat. My father looked at the ground in thought, emotions swirled around in his eyes. I thought he would be ecstatic that I found my mate.
"Which young man is it?" my mother asked me. She glanced at my father and noticed his distant look in his eyes. I looked at her confused.
"What..?" I asked. It then dawned on me that she made the same mistake I did of thinking 'Jack' was only a guy's name. I chuckled at her causing her brows to knit together questioningly.
"Mom, 'Jack' is short for 'Jackelynn'. She's a girl." I said with amusement. Kaitlynn coughed on her cereal as she laughed with a mouthful of food. Realization crossed mom's face and she laughed at herself.
"Oh! Well, even if she wasn't, we would still love you. Right Kyle." she said pointedly and pushing her elbow in his ribs. He looked up between her and me and mumbled a 'yeah', his eyes returning to the floor as he continued his thoughts. Mom looked at my my father crossly.
"Well, what's she like?" My mother asked, amused at the situation that just played out. My father started walking away towards the stairs.
"Kyle, where are you going? Don't you want to hear about our future daughter-in-law?" mom asked him agitated.
"Huh? Oh, ya, I just need to make a call first. I'll be back..." He trailed up the stairs to his office and shut the door. My mother rubbed her forehead as if she had a headache.
"I swear, that man is going to be the death of me... and you men say women are confusing..." Mom mumbled to herself.
"Well, her brother and her seem really close. She just moves so gracefully and confidently..." I smiled as a picture of her floated through my brain. Mom smiled at me sweetly.
"She sounds like she will make an excellent Luna." Mom kissed my cheek and walked over to the counter picking up a container of cookies. "Take these over to Ethan's tonight for the party. I told his mother I would make them for her." I nodded and she went up the stairs, probably to talk to Dad.
I stood in front of the sink and got a glass of water.
"So is Jackelynn going to the party tonight?" Kaitlynn asked me. I nodded my head looking at her. "What time is it?"
"I'm going over in an hour. Why?" I asked her cautiously.
"I'll go get ready then. Wait for me?" She asked hopefully. I nodded my head at her. Even though she's a year younger than I am, she hangs out with the guys and me a lot; along with her best friend, Anna. I like having her hang around us. She has trained hard for her rank with the pack's warriors and ranks in the top with the guys and I.
I got ready to go and walked downstairs handing the box of cookies over to Kaitlynn to hold in the car. We arrived and she went to go find Anna. I looked over and found Ethan trying to set up some decoration that Anna was telling him how to put up.
"Well if you want it up so bad, why don't you put it up." Ethan grumbled to Jared's little sister.
"If you could actually listen to my directions, then you would've been done by now." She retorted. I chuckled at their usual banter. I walked over next to Jared watching his sister and Ethan argue.
"So when is Jackelynn coming?" Jared asked curiously. I shrugged my shoulders since she didn't tell me when she would be coming. I texted the address to her and she just replied confirming that she got it. Just then I heard two motorcycles engines pull into the driveway. All the doors were open so the sound carried all the way into the back yard where we were. A smile formed on my lips. She walked over with Lucas trailing behind her. I was about to walk up to her but Kaitlynn beat me to it.
"Hi! I'm Kaitlynn!" She introduced herself practically bouncing off the ground. Jakelynn's melodic laugh fluttered into the warm summery air.
"Hi, I'm Jackelynn." She smiled at my sister and held herself confidently.
"She's going to make a great Luna..." my wolf purred. I walked over and put my hands on Kaitlynn's shoulders to stop her bouncing.
"What did you just eat, Kait?" I asked her incredulously.
"I mixed pixie sticks into an energy drink! I think I'm gonna go for a run. Wanna join me? I'm gonna go run. I'll be back soon!" she blurted out in one breath and took off. I chuckled at her hyperness and looked at my mate.
"Well she seems fun." She started, giggling. Her t shirt was printed with some smoky design and her shorts covered just enough to show off her long legs. I led her over to the group, Anna and Ethan still arguing.
"Guys, this is Jackelynn and her brother, Lucas." I said pointing to them. "You just met my sister Kaitlynn. This is Anna, Jared's sister." I said pointing over at the brown haired, mousey girl with a petite frame, despite that she's bossing Ethan around. Anna waved over and smiled at my mate before turning to argue with Ethan more.
"So are you guys twins since you are in the same grade and everything?" Jared asked them both.
"Naw, I'm older but this one here skipped a grade." Lucas replied, grabbing Jackelynn and rubbing her head.
"Mate is smart!" my wolf purred in my mind.
"Hey!" Jackelynn complained, swatting Lucas's hand away. "You're older physically but you don't act like it."
"Oh, but you act like an adult huh?" He retorted back to her. A smirk carved its way onto his face. Jackelynn's smirk fell and she glared at him.
"Don't you dare..." she threatened.
"But maybe you will mature since your birthday is coming up." He smirked evilly at her. Her fist flew up and hit him square in the arm causing him to wince and rub his arm, mumbling a cuss under his breath.
"Your birthday is coming up?" I asked her.
"Sadly, yes." she groaned.
"Why is it such a bad thing?" Anna asked her. Anger flashed through her eyes but she quickly covered it up.
"I just don't like it, is all." she said.
"Don't your parents throw a party or anything for you?" Anna asked. Lucas put his hand on her shoulder. This time it didn't ange my wolf since they are siblings.
"Our mom isn't around anymore and our dad is away at business all the time." Lucas explained. Pain went through their eyes briefly but they covered it up. "But it doesn't matter, we have each other and we have gotten used to it."
"How long had it been just you two?" Anna asked carefully. Jackelynn looked up at her and smiled sadly.
"A long time..." she answered.
"Well, I think we should just let the past be and focus on the only thing that matters: the present. And I think that a certain someone needs a little payback..." Lucas trailed off. Fear filled my mate's eyes and she started to bolt away from him but he grabbed her, picking up a flailing Jackelynn.
"Lucas! Put me down! Don't you dare!" She yelled at him punching his arms and chest, each time he winced.
"Our mate is strong if she can make him wince like that..." my wolf thought, his mind going to activities that he would want to do with her. I was shaken out of my thoughts when I saw her shirt ride up slightly showing some skin on her stomach. Five dark pink lines torn into her skin. I lowly growled at the thought of someone hurting my mate. Lucas walked her over to the pool and was holding her over the water.
"Lucas Knight! I swear! If you throw me in I will kill you!" she threatened him.
"Hmmm," he looked deep in thought. "I don't think you are in any position to make threats, Missy." He smirked at her, earning him a glare. He threw her into the pool and she grabbed onto his shoulders, pulling him in with her.
"Did you see the scars on her stomach?" Jared's voice filled my head through our mindlink. I nodded at him. "They look like some pretty nasty claw marks." I growled loudly again at the thought of someone hurting her. Her head popped up through the water and she swum to the edge of the pool and pulled herself out. Lucas swam over to her and splashed water up at her. Her laugh spilled out of her mouth as she splashed back.
Lucas got out and pulled his soaked shirt over his head. Bruises were forming on his chest and arms where Jackelynn had hit him. There was a dark bruise over his ribs and it looked fresh.
"Damn violent woman." He mumbled at looked over at Jackelynn as she smiled innocently at him.
"Big baby.." she told him as she walked away. Her leather jacket started ringing from its spot on a chair surrounding the pool. Her hips swayed as she walked over and pulled out her phone. She glanced at Lucas with a serious expression. Excusing herself from us, she walked into the house. Jared started talking to Lucas as I tried to listen to Jackelynn to make sure she was ok.
"Liam." She said. "I'm at a party... yes Luke is here too... what's wrong?... oh... ok, why?... alright, tomorrow?... ok, we'll be there... love you too, I'll tell him. Bye" My wolf was mad. Who was this Liam? Why did she say she loved him? I saw her walk back out and walked over to Lucas and leaned closer.
"Liam says hi." she told him and went to lay down on the chair with her jacket.
"Who's Liam?" Jared asked, since he was close enough to pass for overhearing their conversation with human hearing.
"Our father." Lucas answered him. My wolf stopped pacing in my head. That's why she said she loved him, he's her father. A couple hours later, the house was packed with teenagers. It was a typical teenage house party, people dancing, loud music, some couples making out in a dark corner, people had red solo cups in their hands. As werewolves, it takes a lot of alcohol to get us drunk so the werewolf parents don't really care about teenagers drinking. The sheriff of the town is in the pack too so no one in the pack gets into any trouble. Everyone has enough sense not to drive, but it also helps that we can just run home since we all are in very close proximity.
I got pulled away from Jackelynn at the beginning of the party and was now trying to find her.
"There's a rogue here that tried to roofie Jackelynn." Jared's voice floated through my head. I growled and knew my eyes grew black. "I'm going to take him to the cells so we can deal with him tomorrow." I oked his judgement before he continued. "I have to say though, she's going to make a great Luna. She figured it out and switched the drinks and roofied him." He chuckled. I smiled at that thought and wanted to find her even more now.
With everyone's scents mixing, it was extremely hard to follow hers. I found Lucas talking with some guys and went up to him.
"Have you seen your sister?" I asked him. He shook his head 'no'. He leaned closer so he could talk to me over the pounding music.
"Have you tried the roof?" he asked me. I looked at him confused and shook my head. "Try there." I nodded and went up the stairs. Sure enough, there was a window open with her sweet scent flowing in from outside. I poked my head through and saw her sitting on the roof, hugging her knees to her chest, staring at the stars. I made some noise to let her know I was there so not to scare her. Her eyes found my grey ones.
"May I join you?" I asked. She nodded and went back to looking at the stars. I climbed out and sat next to her.
"You ok? You seemed a bit tense after your dad called."  I asked. She nodded her head slightly.
"Ya, just, a lot going on." She replied.
"Why do you call your dad Liam?" I asked cautiously. She shrugged.
"We always have." she replied.
"You ok though? Jared told me what happened earlier with that party crasher." I asked gently. She smiled at me and nodded.
"I'm fine. I can handle myself. It's a tough world but I'm tougher."
"Can I uh, can I ask you something personal?" I said tentatively. She looked at me with her green doe eyes. They looked so kind and caring, but there was a darkness in them. A darkness that she had seen. She nodded slightly. "When you said your mom wasn't around anymore, what did you mean?" She took a slow deep breath, pain flashed in her eyes. "If it's too personal, you don't have to-" she cut me off by holding up her hand.
"She died." She stated simply.
"How?" I pushed gently. Her hand went to her stomach and rubbed against her t shirt covered torso.
"Animal attack." She closed her eyes. I took a breath in.
"Is that why you have a scar on your stomach?" Her eyes snapped to mine quickly.
"How-" she started.
"When Lucas threw you into the pool, your shirt lifted slightly." Her eyes widened. "If you don't want to talk about it I won't push." I got up to leave and her hand reached for mine.
"It's ok." she said, her eyes looking into the forest. I sat back down and looked at her face. Darkness swirled in her eyes.
"You were there... you saw what happened?" I said quietly. She only nodded as a tear rolled down her cheek, her eyes locked into the distance as memories flooded them. I placed my hand on her cheek and wiped it off with my thumb. Sparks flew threw my skin and she leaned her head into my hand, closing her eyes.
Her eyes snapped open and her head jerked up. Guilt clouded her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't be doing this. I- I should just go." she started to get up. I sat there shocked. She was about to step back in the window.
"Wait, you can't drive back." I told her quickly. Her brow knit together.
"Why?"
"There's alcohol here. Didn't you get a drink? What about the roofied drink." She smiled at my concern.
"I don't drink. Even when it's not from some creepy party crasher." she giggled and she hopped back into the house. A few minutes passed and I heard two motorcycles ride off into the woods. I stayed up on the roof for the rest of the party.
