Chapter 5: New friendships and opportunities

You were warm and comfortable. It was a bright and sunshiny morning. You opened your eyes a little to see Dodge sleeping on the floor, and you smiled. You realized you were on the couch. 'That's weird...Why am I not in my bed?'  You thought and saw three arms in front of you. Two of which were your own and the other belonged to someone else. 'Oh right, Tom slept here last night. In my house. On my couch....next to me...'  You thought and immediately started blushing. Looking behind you, you saw Tom still asleep next to you. His arm was wrapped tightly around you. If you got up, you would wake him, and you didn't want to wake him up from a good nights rest. You decided to stay where you were until he got up. But how long could that be? Minutes? Hours? (Days? YEARS?!). You turned to your right side to adjust and your faces were just now inches away from each other. Your face was just as red as last night when you were laughing.

You stared at his sleeping face and silently sighed to yourself. He looked so peaceful when asleep. You smiled a little. You shut your eyes and tried to get some more sleep, curling up next to him in his warmth. About 30 minutes later, Tom started to wake up and opened his eyes to see that he was sleeping next to you. He was a bit surprised at first but then he remembered what happened last night. Laughing and watching a movie, falling asleep next to each other. He sat up a bit, slowly, so as not to wake you up. He stretched and yawned some more. He looked down at your sleeping figure and tucked a stray hair that had fallen in your face behind your ear then rested his hand on your cheek. He smiled and realized that Dodge was next to you guys on the ground. Dodge noticed one of the humans were awake and snapped his head up.

"Shhh." Tom held a finger up to his mouth and made a shushing sound, telling him not to wake you up. Dodge came over to you and put a paw up on the couch next to you. "She's alright, she's just sleeping. She's fine." Tom smiled at Dodge. Dodge then laid his head down next to where his paw was and looked between you and Tom. He stayed like that for a few more minutes. Tom decided to lay back down and sighed out loud. Which woke you up from your long nap. You opened your eyes and looked up at Tom.

"You're awake?" You said, your voice a bit hoarse.

"Yeah, it would appear you are too." He said and turned towards you while still laying on his side, propping his head up on his arm.

"I've been up for a while, but I just went back to sleep when I saw that you weren't awake yet." You said and looked over at Dodge who was watching the two of you still. "Good morning, boy." You patted him on the head and he instantly perked up.

"I guess we're equal then, huh?"

"I guess so." You smiled up at him. You yawned and uncovered yourself from the warm, fuzzy blanket. You stretched and went into the kitchen to make some breakfast and coffee. Dodge followed close behind you. You poured some dog food into his bowl and gave him some water. You started making some pancakes and bacon and cut up some fruit. It smelled so good you couldn't wait to eat it. You felt Tom give you a hug from behind. You giggled and lightly pushed him away.

"So, what do you wanna do today? I'm not free all day but I've got a little time to spare." Tom said while taking a bite of an apple and jumping up on the table.

"Well, I've got to go back to work today but maybe later tonight we could do something." You said and flipped over your pancakes. You looked over at the time and it read 10:12 and you had to be to work at 11. "I have to go to work in an hour or so, so I'm gonna have to go get ready soon and get to work before I get fired."

"Well, I don't have to start work until 1 so I could look after Dodge if you'd like? I'm sure he wouldn't mind me taking him for a walk." He said and looked down at your dog who was drinking his water.
