CHAPTER 1: The news
(one week ago)
"Victoria Hepburn! Please see the principal right now." It's Monday morning during homeroom time when I heard my name being called through the PA system. "What did I do now," I tell myself. Reluctantly, I got up and made my slow walk to Principal Brown's office.
"Hi Tori," Rachel, the Principal's secretary, greeted me.
"Hey, he called me?" I ask, although I already knew the answer to that. "Yep, he's been expecting you. Go right in."
I nod and open the oak door to the Principal's office. The room is small and cozy; although impossibly white and well organized with file cabinets behind a mahogany desk. A small window is on the right side of the room, with its curtains drawn ever so slightly to let the right amount of sunlight to stream in.
"Close the door behind you, Miss Hepburn."
I did as I was told and went to sit in front of the desk on one of the upholstered chairs. Principal Brown is a small man, barely as tall as me, and I'm only 5''4. He already has a bald spot at the age of thirty-five. He has sharp, dark eyes with a snub nose and chubby cheeks. He would've been an okay looking kind of guy but his forehead is always creased with lines so you don't really know whether he's happy with you or not. And on top of that he has a really short temper.
"You might be wondering why I called you in here today," He paused, and I thought I was supposed to answer when he spoke again. "Well, don't worry because you're not in trouble." "Oh," I say and look around.
I see he has installed a security camera in one of the corners of the room and he has a new potted plant by the window.
"Tori please stop dilly-dallying and pay attention to me. It's not like you're new here anyway, what with your records all these years."I snap back and at least try to listen to him.
"As I was saying, as the Centennial's chief editor, I was thinking that you should get more exposure for the school and yourself. So we're sending you off to New York along with the basketball team."
He said and looked at me expectantly. The Centennial is the school newspaper, and I was made chief editor last year during the last semester of my junior year in high school.
"What?" I asked.
"Were you not listening? I said that we'll send you off to New York with-"
"Yeah, the basketball team. But why are we going there? What's the reason?"
It was aggravating. I needed details, and when someone doesn't give me enough details in one sentence, I tend to get irritated.
"Well, our basketball team scored a training session with the New York Knicks, and some college scouts will be there, so you might as well interview them, cover the training session and get some experience for yourself. I know how much you want to be a writer, consider this a sort-of professional start."
"Wow, that's great. But where would I stay? You can't expect me to always tag along the team right? And am I the only girl going? I don't think I'm going to be very comfortable with that." Like I said; I need details.
"You'll be staying at the same hotel as the team, and you can bring one person with you. Kind of like your assistant. For the training sessions, well yes, you should always be there. It's only going to be for a week; wouldn't you like to go to New York?"
I thought about it for a while, I have always dreamed of going to New York; that is where all the publishing houses are, where my dreams will be made real.
