Have In mind every single chapter is connected to each other. This story goes back and forth in every chapter between "flashbacks" (past tense) and then comes back to reality (present tense). However, some chapters maintain the action from the past as a present tense and then go back to another time further from the past tense which is the "present" or reality in those chapters. These flashbacks you may not understand them at first because they are out of order, and I know it can be sometimes confusing, but as you read, you will be able to answer your questions from the past chapters.
You will see most the chapters start at some point of our protagonist's life, it's either located in the past or in the present. They narrate a series of event that makes them remember some other situation from their past and that's how you enter a "flashback". I dare to say that the flashbacks are the most important parts of the reading. Inside them hide all the answers to the present. Questions like; Why did Vincent and Jane break up? Why do Vincent and Brent hate each other so much? Why does Jane say she hates Vincent, after everything they went through? What is this secret that Jane kept hidden for so long? What did Vincent do in his past that caused him a several trauma?... etc., etc. All the answers to these and many other questions, I promise, you will find them, you just have to keep reading and remember to connect a situation when you see it's been mentioned in the past.
For example, in chapter 11 you will be reading about the first time Jane saw Vincent, this is a flashback from Jane's mind, but you will see that the action is written in present tense. If you have already read from chapter 1 to chapter 10, you will see Vincent mentioned this encounter (from his point of view) back in Chapter 5, but he didn't give any details. This chapter (11) is made to do just that and at the same time, little by little it will give you clues to Jane's actual behavior (Chapters 8, 9 and 10). And that is how most of these chapters work.
Another example, Vincent mentioned a girl named Emma in Chapter 5, remember Jane also mentions her in chapter 9? If you paid attention to chapter 5, you will remember Vincent talked about his short-term relationship with Emma after finding himself rejected by Jane.
Every single detail counts, everything you know about this book, don't forget about it. Trust me, you will need them in order to understand the next chapters that are about to come.
