Was there such thing as missing your dad, even when he was sat in the same house as you every day? Kurt thought they were improving but Burt was pulling back again, like he was afraid of spending quality time with his closest family. They seemed to get along well enough when Kurt was being taught how to ride a bike, or when he would pretend to actually be watching the football game instead of itching to take out a magazine.

Perhaps that's what Burt needed. A "manly" son. One he could connect with over sports and cars.

A straight son.

And maybe Burt was right? Maybe he wasn't really gay and it was stereotypes enforced in his head. Maybe he just acted really feminine but he still preferred women.

He knew he was still gay when he agreed to go on a date with the girl who had been crushing on him for at least a year. Either she was really good at hiding it or he was just oblivious. Maybe a bit of both.

Let's backtrack a little. Kurt walked into the school building wearing a flannel shirt and a hat he took from his dad's impressive collection. No scarves in sight. Of course that attracted quite some attention but he pushed it aside in favour of being casual. Or as casual as one could be, dressed in abhorrent clothing that had no elegance to it whatsoever. He just hoped, against all odds, he wouldn't get hat hair.

As soon as he reached his locker Mercedes approached him as cheerful as always, a little spring in her step. But when she saw him her smile fell. "What happened to you, white boy? Did somebody steal all your clothes?"

Yeah, my irrational self took them all and stuffed them deep inside my closet. Oh, how ironic. "Nope, just trying out a new style. I think this is the first thing my dad actually approves of." Well duh, my dad is the only reason I'm dressed as a monstrosity.

She raised one eyebrow at him but didn't take it any further. "Well come on. Rachel and Tina want to hang out a little before class starts. I hear Tina caught Artie and Brittany locking lips the other day."

Kurt wanted so badly to just go, gossip about the latest glee club pairing, chat with his girls. "No, not today. I was actually going to, uh, organise my locker. Yes," he said.

"But Kurt! Think about all the juicy -"

He waved her away and turned to his locker. Might as well actually organise it. He heard Mercedes walk away after a second of hesitation.

Just as he was rearranging the pictures of him and his best friends, a girl approached him from the side. Was her name Emily? All he did know was that she was in his history class and way too likeable for a person at McKinley.

"Hi..." he said after he turned his body to face her, in the middle of moving a photograph of Rachel and Mercedes a little higher up.

"Emma. I like your hat," she pointed to said clothing item. Kurt wasn't even sure what team was featured on the cap.

"Oh um. Thanks. I like your hair. It's... really soft looking."

Emma laughed, her blue eyes twinkling. "Thank you, so I've been told. Look, I couldn't help but notice your different style today. Not that I was stalking you or anything but usually your outfits are so well thought out and might I say breathtaking. I think it's nice."

Kurt sighed inwardly but kept his facial expression neutral. "Thank you, again. I never really tried this outfit before but I think it reflects more of who I -"

"Would you like to go out some time?" Emma blurted out suddenly. "Oh god I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have said that, I'm so so sorry, I should go," she started to ramble, eyes flashing with fear.
