I stood there silently shocked. Starstruck? No, dumbstruck. Yes, I was utterly dumbstruck. Here at my Prom, singing on the stage was Mr. Kayden Brooks.
I squinted and then began to rapidly blink, pathetically attempting to clear my vision. I was seeing things, definitely seeing things. But was I hearing things too?
“Mac!” Rebecca squealed, lightly punching my arm. “Go up there!”
Kayden was softly smiling, his arm outstretched towards me.
“Mac!” Rebecca started chanting, pumping her fist in the air. “Mac! Mac! Mac!”
Pretty soon, the entire student body started to embarrassingly chant my name, “Mac! Mac! Mac!”
I felt totally obligated to climb on stage. But I refused.
How can you expect me to go up there? He rejected me, he said no. Don’t try telling me he’s here as friends, he has a girlfriend. I bit my lip, swiftly looking around the sea of faces for help. I didn’t want to go up there, no not at all.
“Mac,” Kayden started as I began to slowly back towards the door.
I furiously shook my head, I honestly was confused as stupid as it sounds. Why was he even here?
The room seemed like it was spinning. I frantically looked around the banquet hall. To my left was a swirling Eric and Erica, his shiny red bow tie matching her fiery red strapless dress. My heart pace quickened, my shaking palms grew sweatier. On my right stood gorgeous Keith in a classic tux with his date, the quiet Dani Preston. Standing on stage, right in front of me was a concerned Kayden, his forehead wrinkled with worry. Everything seemed fuzzy, as my throbbing head tried to take in the scene.“Mac!” I turned to find a worried Rebecca, “You okay?” My vision suddenly began to blur as everything grew more and more disoriented.
“No,” I choked out.
My back made contact with the metal door as I swiftly turned the knob behind me and fled.
Descending down the front stairs of the banquet hall with my dress fluttering behind me and my heels in a hand, I began to think. Was I overreacting? Yeah, sure, but did I have the right? Yeah I do. 5 months after separation, Kayden found a new girlfriend. 5 months. He was so neutral during our texts, he made sure we were just friends. And when I asked him to Prom as friends, he said no. And yet he was here. Perhaps he felt bad, I don’t know. All I know is, I’m hopelessly sad and confused.
Disneyland was ridiculously far from my house. I sadly didn’t have a ride since all my friends were still inside.
My vision started to blur, the corners of my eyes becoming dangerously blurry. I choked back the lump in my throat and bit back a sob, I was not going to cry!
I’ve tried playing it cool, but when I’m looking at you, I can’t ever be brave, cause you make my heart race...
I pulled my phone out of my midnight black clutch and examined the caller ID, expecting a picture of Kayden eating ice cream. Instead, I found myself staring at a picture of Rebecca picking her nose.
“Mac!” Rebecca yelled as soon as I hit the accept key. “Where the hell are you?!”
“I’m gonna catch a taxi,” I murmured, pathetically waving my hands in the air in a sad attempt to catch a cab. “Ugh.”
The tears threatened to spill over the side of my face.
“Why?!” She screamed over the blaring roar in the background, a mash up of You Make Me Feel and Sexy and I know it was at full blast.
